ASUS Eee PC 4G Surf - Pure White Intel Mobile CPU 7" WVGA 512MB Memory 4GB SSD NetBook

Pros: -Open Office and Firefox preinstalled = capable of handling word docs, excel sheets, powerpoint presentations, avi / mpeg files, pdfs, etc. -weighs like a pound! fits in my white coat pocket (medical student coat) -can play vids very well (scrubs vids, house md episodes, lectures that i watch), screen resolution looks suprisingly vibrant -set up was ridiculously simple, i was on the internet in 30 seconds, thumb drive transfers of ppt / docs/ avi files worked perfectly, it could handle it all -***Interface is windows xp wannabe, so it is very easy to get used to - right click brings up menu, taskbar at bottom, copy cut and paste shortcuts identical, eject usb drive button same, etc. Very effective! -keyboard layout seems best possible for size; full qwerty board

Cons: -slows down when you have 4+ windows open. but for 300 bucks, of course you're not getting a dualcore processor. for the price, this is still a ludicrously good value -keyboard is cramped - just a warning. but this is not because of layout; this is because it is by nature an ultraportable pc so its supposed to be tiny. personally i like it -another warning - obviously this is not meant to be a powerful pc, prob terrible at handling games or complex software. it performs basic functions without fuss, has a very nice screen, yet only weighs like a pound, fits in a pocket or purse, and is only 350 bucks. also, os is very stable and trimmed down. you can install win xp if u want, comes w guide and support DVD with win drivers

Overall Review: i own a $3000 IBM thinkpad with the works (DVD RAM, 1 gb ram, 100 gb hard drive, Radeon vid card, etc), and a $2000 dell xps desktop with a 21 in lcd screen. Yet i use this baby every day! why? bc its ultraportable, yet gives me all the functions i need at lectures, in small groups, to study in the library, and to work - anywhere. it works simply and effectively.

Pros: Small. Light. Excellent build quality. Just the right features. Cheap. Exceeds all expectations. This computer is very fast for its price. It is faster booting any operating system and beats out my top of the line desktop in speed. (Thank you SSD and Linux) I was able to easily install Ubuntu Linux on it and get everything working including the 3D Desktop with compiz-fusion under the Stock RAM. Free space is easily expandable with SDHC cards or USB Memory Keys. Battery life is just as advertised. Also, it's cheap enough that when a new version come out in 6 months to a year, I won't feel bad upgrading. At the price of a normal $2500 Ultra-Mobile, I can buy 6-8 of these little things; in other words, If Asus maintains their price point in further revisions, I can keep upgrading for years and still not spend as much as I normally would on a $2500 UMPC.

Cons: Must take apart chassis in order to upgrade RAM - took an extra 15 minutes and some web surfing to find disassembly instructions. Other than that, absolutely none.

Overall Review: Stock Xandros is awesome but Ubuntu is awesomer so I went with it. I also have XP nlited on an SDHC card incase I want to use it (can boot from SD). An Ubuntu Linux install takes up about 2.5GB-3.0GB of space leaving you with 1.0GB-1.5GB of free space.

Pros: Small, light, and pretty darn good-looking! The built in wifi works better than most laptops I've owned, it has solid connections even with weak signals. The display is bright and although small, feels just right for everyday computing. I've purchased several laptops from Newegg and this is the first one that actually plays Youtube and flash video in full screen with no problems. Other "budge" laptops had problems running flash movies/animations full screen or not at all. No problems here, this little machine blew me away, everyone I've shown it to wants one (if not two!)

Cons: The keys could be a tad bigger on the keyboard, or my fingers could be smaller :)

Overall Review: I'm amazed by the quality and power of this laptop, perhaps it's the operating system, maybe Asus is using better hardware, but this mini-laptop blows away the Dual-Pentium and the other Celeron laptops I've tried this year. I won't be playing hard-core video games on this but for browsing the web, checking email, using AIM, this is the next best thing to having a powerful machine that is so small and lightweight; not to mention it looks sexy in white.

Pros: I'm really not sure why anyone would give this laptop a bad review? It perfect for people on the go, just like the packaging says. OS Boot-up time is as fast as my quad-core machine, no joke; count to 8 and your ready to browse windows, linux, whatever you may install, you gotta love SSD drives! It makes absolutly no noise, and manages to stay cooler than any other laptop I've ever used. It's definately not a hardcore gaming machine, although it does play many games that dont require alot of resources with ease, but its perfect for web browsing, word processing, powerpoint, and the many other basic applications. I bought one as a christmas gift and immediatly purchased another for myself. Way to go ASUS!

Cons: The built in touchpad is way to small, so you might want to consider investing in a USB mouse. Screen is great, but its somewhat small, like the add says 7". Just have to plug in an external monitor or projector for a larger size.

Overall Review: Next model hopefully will include a larger SSD, larger touchpad, and moved speakers to expand the screen size.

Pros: Sleek and efficient machine for basic web surfing and word processing. This UMPC can easily play back divx and mp3 files.

Cons: The white model of the 4G surf does not have an access panel to easily upgrade the memory. The black 4G surf model has the exact same specs, but also has this access panel in order to easily upgrade the system memory.

Overall Review: If you have no intention of tinkering with your machine, then this model and color is the way to go. Be warned that the Pure White color cannot upgrade the memory without voiding the warranty. Newegg refunded my initial model, minus the restocking fee, and I ordered the black 4G after I got my refund approval.

Pros: Wonderful little machine that does exactly what I needed. Installed eeeXubuntu, which is a community entirely geared toward putting that distro of ubuntu on this laptop. Great support online for it.

Cons: Screen size is a problem when working within windows and size of the hard drive leaves something to be desired.

Overall Review: By getting an sdhc card you can just ignore the size of the hard drive

Pros: This sub-notebook is just incredible! I love the Linux Xandros layout. The screen is crystal clear and is a well made quality Asus product.Great for Email,surfing the internet,office tasks and simple gaming. I would recommend it to anyone on the go or traveling to pick up this unit. Battery is 2.5+ hours.

Cons: Pure White version can get dirty compared to the Galaxy Black version. I had to take my Pure White apart to upgrade the memory and let me tell you this is not for the inexperienced to deal with. There are rumors that the Galaxy Black 4G Surf comes with the memory hatch not found on this model.If I had to do it all over again I would of spent the extra money and bought the 4G Premium with the webcam just to have the memory hatch.

Overall Review: In order to enable Advanced Mode for Xandros you need to do some homework and recommend some Eee forums reviews and support which has proven very helpful to me.There is a great need for extra memory of any kind supported. 1GB Mushkin PC5300 667 sold here is an awesome match for performance and superior memory quality.

Pros: Very small. Easy to take where you could never take a full computer before. Runs XP nicely. Boots quickly, My XP install takes around 22-24 seconds to boot. Build quality was better than I expected. Speakers do a decent job. The windows drivers are included on DVD, and are VERY EXCELLENT. Wifi is very sensitive, and I can pick up access points that I've never seen before. Great quality sound from the headphone jack - I'm going to toss my mp3 player.

Cons: The included customized xandros linux is really basic. Keyboard takes a little getting used to, but gets better after a while. Battery life is just okay, but charges fairly quickly. The screen takes a lot of getting used to... some windows don't fit on the screen right in XP and it takes a little fidgeting to see everything.

Overall Review: I'm typing this review from my eee pc, running Windows XP home, and Firefox 2. It gets a little warm at times, but not bad compared to other mini-laptops. The fan rarely turns on, and is so crazy quiet and blows so little air, that I never can tell if it's on or off. Great for watching movies on trips!
