Yes it comes with a charger. The charger is different then your average cellphone charger because it puts out more power than the average cellphone charger.

No it does not.  I use a very inexpensive adapter to connect USB drives and SD card readers.

It is the original model, 2012. I love it! There are some differences, like the camera and connectivity, but since I only use mine over WiFi, it suits me perfectly.

Is this device Gen 1 or Gen 2?

It is a 1st gen. Only has 1 camera for video calls. Lot of storage and is pretty fast. Plays all my mp4 video's with no problems. My wife has the 2n gen and is a little thinner and has 2 cameras, but at a $100.00 more.

No, the only camera faces the user.  Makes it difficult but not impossible to shoot the other direction.  This is the only drawback I have found about this device. I have had mine since Oct 2013 use it daily.  forward facing camera could be a deal breaker but I use my android phone for that.

The specs for this ASUS Google Nexus 7 tablet say that it comes with Android™ 4.1 Jelly Bean.
However, I have seen that Jelly Bean comes in newer versions (4.2 and 4.3).
Since I'm a newbie to tablets and other mobile devices, I'm wondering if this ASUS Nexus tablet can be easily updated from 4.1 Jelly Bean to 4.3 Jelly Bean ??

Because this is a pure Google tablet, updates are very easy.  When I bought mine in September of 2013, it came with Jelly Bean 4.2. Once I had network connectivity, Jelly Bean 4.3 was downloaded automatically and all I had to do was click the update button.  A few weeks later, it downloaded KitKat, and the process was the same.  It is now running the latest version of KitKat which is Android 4.4.2.  The hardest part of upgrading to the next version of Android is waiting for it to be released, but Nexus devices get upgrades before others do.

No this version of the Nexus 7 does not accept a SIM card.  The Nexus 7 comes in a wi-fi version (this one) which will not accept a SIM card, and a mobile data capability version which will accept a SIM card.  You have to check the product specs to confirm which one you are buying.

Can you put books to read on this?

You can download apps such as Aldiko / Kindle / Google Books to read books in various formats. You can copy books to the tablet using a usb cable or through email.

I was wondering does this product have an Office type environment in which to do documents, excel type spreadsheets, etc. such a Polaris office for Android/Samsung products?

I am unaware of such a specific application though I know there a number of similar applications that provide such services in the nexus environment. I suggest you google for these services in the with a Nexus caviot, that should yield results and a path to persue further research.

This is the original 2012 model. Not the revised 2013 version. The easiest way to tell is to look for a camera on the back of the tablet. The newer 2013 model has a camera there.
