It is 1st gen, easy way to tell is it only has forward facing camera. I would imagine it could take a T-Mobile SIM as it is definitely unlocked but I do not have T-Mobile service to confirm.

can I use this tablet as a phone?

This is a tablet, not a phone. It has no built-in phone capabilities.

That said, any app that emulates a phone (examples could be Skype or Voxaphone), together with a headset, will enable you to use the tablet as a phone, meaning, send voice over the data stream.

Note that the tablet has no headset included, and you need to get a separate headset (earbuds+microphone). Even more conveniently, you could use any bluetooth headset.

I have used the tablet as a phone surrogate in this fashion in other countries with good success.

People keep talking about putting a sim card in this. Does this work on my home wifi, without a cellular data plan, or does it have to have a sim card in it?

This will work on any Wi-Fi network without a cellular data plan. I don't have a cellular data plan right now, so I just keep the tablet in Airplane mode. But you can put a SIM card in it in order to use it with your cellular data plan if you choose.

No, it only has the front- facing camera . useful for video chatting such as Skype.

So can i just pop in my ATNT sim card and this thing will work as a tablet that can surf the web and make phone calls like a phone?

If you put in a valid sim card, you can access the web thru the data paln you have with the sim card (per agreement with your phone co)  You can not use it as a phone.  It is not a phone and it will not show dial pad or ringtone like a phone.  You can certainly use internet phone program like SKYPE or google phone to make or receive phone calls that way.

This is the 2012 Model - It appears to be new old stock.  I received two of these.  The batteries in both units were very dead.  I never got the first one to work.  The second one finally started after a long time on the charger and multiple reset attempts.

Yes, mine came brand new and is working great.  If it does not charge right away it definitely will after putting in some effort.  Has been working flawlessly ever since and the cellular access is a real plus.
