I don't think I remember it coming with WIndows 8.1 already on there, but the 8.1 update is free so all you'd have to do is go to your update center and download it.  In fact, I think the first thing I did while setting it up was that because it notified me that 8.1 was available for download.

Yes it does, though none of the pictures show it.  That was a real selling point for me, since I'm always on the computer in the dark.  You just press the Function (FN) key and the space bar to turn the illumination on or off.

I believe office 365 in included. That is the current Version of student office, You can buy a key from Microsoft at student price to use more that the free trail that is included. Microsoft will only want to verify your student Email. We are really happy with this computer. fast sleek, my wife loves it. It a knock off of the Mac Book Pro design. The battery is even internal.

Can switch out the HDD to an SSD?

Yes, you can switch it out. You will have to disassemble the laptop anyway to fix the jumpy track pad issue by covering the back of it with electrical tape anyway so you could replace the hard drive as the same time.

You should check the Lenovo site for this.  I thought the same thing because Win8 is annoying imo.  Before you do - try the classic shell google it and it will give you the win 7 experience.

8.1 is a free upgrade from Microsoft.  Very easy to install it yourself.

It shows it's marked down to $550 in the list of ultrabooks. but when I click on it, it shows 799. Is this being marked down?

When I purchased this Ultrabook there was a promotional price offered of $550.00 during the holidays.  After clicking the product the promotional price was again displayed of $550.00. I never had a discrepancy between the two navigating from page to page. If I were to choose which price was correct between the $550 and $799, I would choose the latter.

The SSD is not a traditional laptop drive, it is a chip on the motherboard.  The hard drive is upgradeable though.  A hybrid drive would be a good option
