is the screen detachable?

No, the screen is not detachable.

It is, however, a touchscreen hinged in such a way that it can rotate ~280-290 degrees from the closed position. The effect is much like having a tablet on a stand, except that you obviously can't detach the "stand."  The keyboard is, of course, facing down in this position--but the keyboard & trackpad are automatically shut off by an internal sensor, to avoid accidental clicks/keystrokes.

I initially bought it in spite of this gimmicky feature, because the specs and price point were what I need.  And it does seem like just a cutesy parlor trick, but I've been surprised by how often I tend to actually use it in this mode. When I'm watching Netflix or giving presentations, it's just a nice option to have--and it doesn't interfere at all with the normal laptop experience.

Does this laptop come with the operating cd for WIN 8?

It does not. In fact, if you accidentally delete the recovery partition, it will cost 70 dollars to get new recovery media (an installation CD).

This however is probably not a drawback of this laptop, but probably of all modern laptops. Microsoft is making it harder for people who actually like computers to continue playing with their software. No joke, one of the things they asked me was, "did you install Linux?" when I called asking for a replacement OS, or a download link for it. As if it's a big no-no to use my laptop the way I want to use it.

Want my advice, go Apple. Microsoft is moving towards Apple's whole philosophy by the look of it, but they're doing it worse. If money is no issue, Apples are superior in almost everyway for just a simple laptop (word processing, internet browsing, watching movies).

can this laptop burn cds?

No. This machine does not have an optical drive (CD/DVD drive), so it cannot read nor burn CDs nor DVDs.

Does Windows 8 pose a problem with space? I've noticed some other models have issues with Windows 8 on this size hard drive.

Windows 8 install plus backup image of initial setup leaves you with about 50gb free. You can increase that by about 18gb if you put the backup image onto a flash drive. If you need more space that isn't on the cloud I would suggest using an external hard drive. Most of my important things are in the cloud already so I don't even have to use much space on the hard drive.

It weighs about 3 pounds which is pleasantly light. It's equivalent to about 4 cans of soda pop.

On the Flex 2 14", I thought I saw that this includes a free upgrade to Windows 10 when available.  Is this correct, could you please confirm the free upgrade on this item?

Almost everyone running Windows 7 and above will get a free upgrade to Windows 10 probably around July-August. You will love it. I am running the Windows 10 Technical Preview latest build and each build just gets better. It is very much like Windows 7 with the best features of Windows 8 and a whole lot of cutting-edge OS stuff. Can you say "Cortana"?

there is an integrated graphics card (intel) in this particular model, and you cannot add one.  you can increase the 8gb ram to 16gb, and because the graphics are integrated, that could increase the available memory available for graphics processing.
