My son needs 100 GB Hard drive.  I know nothing about computers.  This computer says 1TB is that adequate?

1TB is approximately 10 times 100GB, using the approximation that 2^10 is approximately 10^3. So, yes...

However if your son only needs 100gb, you may consider a laptop with a solid state hard drive rather than this mechanical one so that it will be faster and resilient to falls and other physical trauma. Here at my university, a fellow student was mad when her WiFi wasn't working (she was submitting a school assignment)... She slammed her laptop lid and killed her hard drive. If it was solid state, it would not have died. Food for thought.

Backlit keyboard?

it's not backlight (sorry) i failed to recognize that before my purchase but if you can manage with out it I'd recommend this laptop. Get rid of superfish (malware) and you are ready to go. I use mine for audio production/composing and that 16gb is really awesome to have no latency or lag issues anywhere and I push it really hard.

There are three USB ports on this laptop.  1x USB3.0 and 2x USB2.0.  It is a dual core i7 Broadwell chip.

Yes no problem, anything 7 or 8 goes to 10 free. Go to Google and type in Windows 10 media creator. Download and run, hit upgrade this pc. Done.

As near as I can tell it is. It's my son's laptop and it has Windows 8.1 installed (which I've used for a total of about 10 minutes) which makes it difficult to ascertain with absolute certainty. My son assures me it is 64-bit.

Short Answer: Yes.

Slightly longer answer: All computers running a licensed copy of Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 will qualify for the free upgrade when Windows 10 is released (not including those with an Enterprise license).

16 GB memory, as it said in the description. That's considered plenty for normal use (even medium graphics usage). If you are a highly graphical user, especially in design, you probably need more.
