Yes, in fact it's one of the best eReaders out there.

To answer your other question, the kindle books vary in size so it's difficult to say. In my experience, size wise they start at around 600KB and top out at about 10MB (10,000KB). Taking the middle ground at around 5MB, and subtracting 2GB for the Android Operating System... (1000MB x 14GB / 5MB = 2867.2) So if you were using it purely as an eReader, I would estimate it would store somewhere around 2,500 to 3,000 books.

The Fire HDX 7 only has a Front-facing HD camera, but the Fire HD 7 has a Front-facing VGA camera and a 2 MP rear-facing camera.

Hi, 
In the Specs list it appears I can add more than the 16 GB of storage but from my readings the Fire does not allow for addable storage, is this true?  I would certainly want more storage capacity.

No microSD card slot unfortunately. Only extra storage available would be via the cloud.
