Put a small dot of the thermal paste in the center of the processor. Then spread with your finger until an even thin film across the entire contact service that will be on contact with the heatsink.

do I need thermal grease to replace my fan?

If you have to remove the heat sink yes you need the grease, if you can remove the fan from the heat sink without breaking the seal between the processor and heat sink you won't need the grease.

is this as thick as as5?

dont know how thick as5 is but it is a little runny but not to much. it actually makes it so the heat sink spreads it out good on its own
