ProBox23 – Thin Mini ITX Tiny Box

ProBox is MSI's brand new barebone series, custom designed for commercial purposes. ProBox23 is a super-small barebone with space-saving benefits. The new ProBox23 equips the H81 chipset, which is perfect for commercial applications. The specially designed VESA mount makes mounting the ProBox behind a monitor very easy, and saves more space than ever. Additionally, it also supports up to 65W CPUs and provides a high-performance for a wide range of applications.

Thin Mini-ITX Platform with High Performance

MSI's new thin mini-ITX barebone can be equipped with Intel® Core™ i3, i5 and i7 processors. The MSI ProBox23 also includes a highly efficient CPU cooler, which is custom designed and supports CPUs up to 65W TDP. It promises the user will experience a high system performance and there is no need to compromise between size and power. The CPU cooler is smartly controlled by the system to provide the best cooling and an excellent balance between noise and performance.

Custom Designed VESA Mount

ProBox23 is designed for users and commercial enterprises that require a high performance and space saving solution altogether. The custom VESA mount is custom made to save space. With just one screw, the MSI ProBox23 can be mounted easily and neatly behind a monitor. Furthermore, the mount is flatly designed to reduce the distance between the monitor and a wall.

Reliable and Stable

ProBox23 is equipped with a MSI H81TI Thin Mini-ITX motherboard. This motherboard uses award-winning Military Class 4 components. Military Class 4 is the next step in high quality components. Hi-C CAPs, Solid CAPs, Dark CAPs, together with SFC and Dark Chokes, ensure the system runs stable under extreme conditions. These key components have all passed extreme testing ensuring stable operation in the harshest environments.

Faster than Ever

The ProBox23 series. This series uses the latest Intel® H81 chipset, and support the 4th Generation Intel® Core™ Processor, the high performance processor of its kind to have the graphics processing unit (GPU) and CPU integrated onto the one chip, while also building a set of visual functions into the chip that ensure higher image quality when viewing video content or photos.

4K UHD has twice the horizontal and vertical resolution of the 1080p HDTV format (3840 x 2160), with four times as many pixels overall. MSI Bento23 native HDMI 1.4 output supports 4K Displays, delivering high quality next-gen screen.

Space Saving without Compromise

With a capacity of just 140.3 cubic inches (2.3 Liters), the tiny sized ProBox23 saves a lot of space compared to traditional desktop PCs. A standard ATX tower is easily bigger than 30 Liters and now with the new ProBox23 MSI can provide equal performance. With MSI ProBox23 there is no compromise between size and performance.

mSATA – SSD (Option)

ProBox23 equips one onboard mSATA 6Gbps connector. It is easily to upgrade storage to SSD with only one screw and increase 5 times faster accessing speed.

Dual 2.5" HDD

It is capable to install two 2.5" storage device with SATA III. Standard 2.5" HDD housing supports 9mm or 7.5mm HDD or SSD.

Mean little box

Pros: The box is solidly built. Fast and low heat with a i3-4160. Powerful enough to run WOW on medium settings at 85-100fps. Good setup options with the msata and mini-pcie sockets. Dual channel memory. Lots of usb sockets. Comes with a cpu cooler which is keeping my CPU at 36c idle 65 under load.

Cons: Small size limits cooler choices. Only two USB 3.0 sockets. No wifi card included, though antenna are included. Room for two 2.5" drives but only cabling and hardware for one drive. You'll need power and sata splitters and hardware. Case ventilation could be better.

Overall Review: I bought this primarily as an HTPC. I have outfitted it with a 120gb msata and a 2tb 2.5" drive to house movies and other media. It runs Kodi very well with the i3-4160 streaming from my PLEX server. For the heck of it I installed WOW and am surprised how well its running under Win7 64bit.

Set up as follows:
MSI ProBox23
MyDigitalSSD 120GB 50mm BP4 mSATA
SAMSUNG Spinpoint M9T ST2000LM003 2TB
G.SKILL 8GB (2 x 4GB) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600
Intel Core i3-4160 Haswell Dual-Core 3.6 GHz
Windows 7 SP1 64bit

Plain, Simple, Affordable HTPC

Pros: Small, quiet, cool running and very easy to assemble.

Cons: None for me.

Overall Review: Purchased to replace an older and much louder HTPC. I am very satisfied with it. Worked from the first press of the power button. I installed the Core i3-4130T, 8 GB Crucial ram (2 x 4GB) and an HGST 1TB hard drive. Also installed wireless/Bluetooth card for internet. No issues whatsoever. Runs cool and quiet. The only thing of note is the instructions say to apply thermal compound to the processor but the included heat sink has thermal compound already applied similar to the stock cooler included with Intel processors. No complaints as it works well and saved me a step.

I like it. Can't boot from USB3 though.

Pros: I like this little system.

I put it together with a Celeron G1840, Crucial's CT2K8G3S160BM 16GB ram kit, an ADATA ASP310S3-64GM-C G^GB m-sata SSD to boot from, and a Crucial CT512MX100SSD1 512GB sata SSD.

Everything came together flawlessly, and the system booted fine once I installed Windows Server 2012R2 Datacenter Core. I added the Hyper-V role and imported a few VMs (already on the 512GB sata drive which I had pulled from another system).

I mounted the system on the wall in a closet (love that VESA mount!) It is running well. I will update this review if I run into any issues or oddities.

Cons: The system seems unable to boot from either of its USB3 ports. I tried multiple bios settings in hopes of finding a way, but none worked. However it booted without problem from USB2.

The paper manual is a bit thin. I would have appreciated having BIOS documentation on paper. I confess I did not look at the included CD.

As others have noted, MSI are being stingy about the screws and rubber grommets. They should have included another set.

In spite of these minor complaints I have given the system a 5 star rating.

Overall Review: The motherboard is MSI's H81TI ... this really should be in Newegg's tech specs.

Very close to really good product

Pros: Comes very close to being an excellent product. Very simple to assemble, very quiet, and the thermals are decent. Zero issues with a 65W cpu

Cons: Loses a few eggs for some nit picks:

Why only one video output (hdmi) Haswell/Broadwell support up to 3 video outputs - a display port would have been nice!

The mSATA is ony SATA-2 not SATA-# severely limiting the transfer rates of your mSATA - I get it that the H81 chipset only has 2 native 6gbps ports, but why not use one of the for the eSATA port?

Utilities included a tad balky

Overall Review: A decent product, but with a couple changes could have been excellent!

good purchase, high value

Pros: compact, cheap, SOLID and the motherboard has all the features I needed (VGA, USB ports, etc) I use it for a home server that runs about 20 different apps. NAS, web, transcoding, backups, etc. It's tiny, runs quiet, and cool, and isnt some plastic pile of junk,

Cons: literally the ONLY CON is that there is no mounting hardware for a second hard drive. You'll also need a power splitter but other than that, its great.

Overall Review: if you're looking for a small home office server, look no further...

Excellent Little Box

Pros: Great size, silent, unobtrusive, easy to put together (just add processor, ram and SDD. Ability to put a "real" processor in such a small box is a big plus.

Cons: None

Overall Review: I bought a couple of MSI boxes about 8 years ago and they will not quit. They served well as servers and workstations. But they are quite anemic by today's standards so I'm replacing them with these units. A lot of power in a tiny box!

Great mini PC

Pros: Small, quiet, cool, fast, good I/O

Cons: No hardware for 2nd hard drive, power LED single color despite BIOS offering dual color option

Overall Review: I researched dozens of systems before buying this. The thing that scared me away from many of them was an included CPU that could be too slow. Many of them were also lean on ports and had reports of running hot. This contains a standard MSI mini-ITX motherboard and has most of the benefits of a full size system.

The other complaints about the lack of hardware for a second HDD/SSD are valid, unless you only want one drive. These aren't even standard mounting screws; they are non-standard screws that go through rubber mounting grommets before going into the drive. Standard mounting screws and washers might work, but what an obvious omission by MSI. I only plan on one SSD, so no problem for me.

I put a bottom-of-the-line G1840, 8GB RAM, and 240GB SSD in and it boots Win7 in seconds. The BIOS is graphical and quite impressive. The CPU fan never runs above the base 12.5% even with high CPU load for an extended period of time, making the noise level of this setup essentially silent.

One thing I found odd is that despite the BIOS offering a blinking power LED or dual color option for sleep mode, the LED is only white. This means if you set it to dual color, it will turn off in sleep.

The bottom of the motherboard was full of solder flux. Newegg replaced it and was great, but the replacement was only slightly better. I cleaned some of it off but have never seen such a dirty computer board before in nearly 20 years of buying hardware.

Overall happy and recommended.

Just OK, nothing special

Pros: Nice hardware, small and quiet. Goes together in about 5 minutes. Was nice to see anti vibe rings in there, i used SSD's so i didn't need them but its a nice gesture

OH- 5 eggs for N/Egg on a 3 day return on my RMA. Not my fault it took 15 days to get there.

I own 4 MSI gaming L/Tops and 3 D/Tops so my review may be biased- or maybe not.

Cons: Only 1 display port -- i bought a WIDI card for mine.
Throw the software disc away it dont work. "Live Update6" will give you a bunch of stuff that don't work either.
Lack of any technical documentation by MSI. I have a stack of MSI books here from other equipment here so i know you guys have the ability..The non working software. And if i scratch it or break something where do get replacement parts?

Overall Review: Dear Vendor,

Do not apologize for the issues that we are having with this product, that will not help.
We have asked questions and stated our concerns regarding the product, we made suggestions for improvement but or requests go unanswered. Leaving an email address and phone number does nothing to resolve our issues, nor does it show genuine concern on your part. Most of these issues which have been posted to your "SUPPORT BOARDS" have gotten us no resolution from your company. No more empty promise's or apologies. Please start with fixing the software, Command Center didnt work a year ago when i bought the first one of these and it still dont work today and now i am on my third unit.

Best Regards,

The Customer's

Quick- the extra board jumpers are for infrared and jtag bios programming cable. I used a WIDI card. Flip the sat cable -elbow toward board. I wouldn't use a 65Watt + CPU, thing is only 100watts. Has an extra fan header if you decide to cut a hole in it though.
