Using mp3 you will need approx 40 Gb
FLAC , WAV , Apple Lossless etc all require much more
So no your 500 CDs will not fit on 16 Gb

hi there, will iOS7 be an upgraded program with this or will it always operate off iOS6?

I bought this for my wife as a replacement for an older iPad that got lost. It had IOS6 on it when we got it and then after IOS7 was released we were able to upgrade it. As I recall it didn't even require us to connect it to iTunes; just upgrade through the actual iPad itself. Hope that helps!
