Question 1

I don't understand how this device gets powered up.   Is it provided with a changer working off a household outlet?   Or does it recharge by connecting to the USB port on a computer.

The battery gets recharged by connecting to a USB port on a computer.  There is no need for an AC adapter.  The single cord provided is all that is needed, one port on the battery (see picture) is an input and the other is an output.  When the small end of the cable is connected to the battery the larger USB connector would be connected to the PC to charge the battery.  When the battery is used as a source of power for charging a device such as a phone the large end (USB connector) is connected to the battery and the small end of the cable would be plugged into the device you are charging.

Question 2

What voltage is the battery in this power bank? The 7800 mAh figure doesn't mean anything without the accompanying voltage spec.

Good question. The mAH rating is really independent of voltage. If you wanted the power (watts) rating, then voltage would be in the equation. As power is a result of voltage X amps. I am also wondering what the actual battery voltage is, since it supplies 5V to your device, but needs only 5V to charge! There has to be some kind of DC/DC converter because no battery will charge when given just it's rated output voltage. Example, your car voltage is around 13.8V when it's running. That's what the battery needs to charge. The 7800mHA rating is crazy IMO.  But mine does power my smart phone a real long time on a charge! Thanks!

I'm looking for a portable, battery operated device that I can use to charge multiple (3-4) mobile devices at a time. This looks like what I should get. Is that correct?

No; this is a high-quality external battery, but it only has one usb port.  Even if you used a usb hub to connect multiple devices, the total power output is limited to 1.0 amps -- perhaps enough for two phones, but no more than that.  There are some very nice products on NewEgg (including some from PQI) that have a higher power output (amps) as well as a higher battery capacity (mAh), and have two usb ports for charging two devices.  Using a portable usb hub plugged into a high-power usb port (2.1 amps), you could use one of these batteries to charge 3 or 4 phones at once.  But if you you are thinking of charging multiple tablets you're probably going to need more than one external battery.

How do I charge a Mac Air?

This battery is meant to charge Cell Phones and small devices, is NOT meant to charge laptops and such devices.  To charge a Mac Air you'd need a bigger battery and probably make an adapter for it so you can charge it.  You charge this battery from a USB port or from a  5 Volt charger with a USB port ( Cell Phone charger )

Does this work with the iPhone 5s?

The unit only has a standard full-sized USB outlet on it for powering other devices.  You would need an Apple standard USB to Iphone connector charging cable to use this with an Iphone of any persuasion.  All it is, is a high-capacity battery with a 5-volt output
