Yes, this camera is indoor-only (D-Link specifies in the description if a camera is "outdoor use" or "weatherproof" for outdoor cameras).

No this does not run on batteries but it is an awesome camera. It must be plugged in to a 110 volt outlet after it is programmed

That's a tough one to answer since every ones wifi needs and equipment are different. I have to say that I think the Wifi range of these cameras are very good. In my instance 3 of the 4 cameras are on the first floor while the 4th camera is on the second floor with the computer and wireless router. I have very little trouble with this layout. 3 questions:

1) does the D-link work with out having a connected computer on? I want the monitoring to happen without having to have my laptop on 24/7

2) Does the monitoring work? Does it send email alerts? dos it record when an alert is set?

3) can you see faces from say 4 feet away from the camera?

1) As long as the camera itself has been properly configured, connected to the Wi-Fi and registered with your MyDLink account, you can access it from anywhere with your smartphone or any computer (via DLink app or website).

2) You can configure several triggers (sound, motion or both) to email you or/and record on a SD card.

3) The video quality is surprisingly good and you can see faces even across the room about 20 ft away.  The camera itself has an adjustable focus ring - make sure it's in focus and you'll see a sharp image even on your smartphone. Night vision is also very sharp.

I understand that the camera itself does not record, but does it record to a Cloud that I can access later or do I have to have a DVR to do that?  Thank you.

I never used the cloud to record for this camera. I have over 10 cameras with different models including this one and i use the dlink view cam software from them to record everything locally on my laptop in my house. I think it can record to the cloud, but never did. Doesnt answer your q, but hopefully its another option for you to choose from.

1) Can this camera be connected to any newer router? Maybe the UBEE all-in-one box that Timer Warner is using now?

2) Is the installation simple? I've had Foscam cameras, and their interface is very clunky....

1) This camera can work on any Wi-Fi network (N protocol). The newest AC protocol Wi-Fi routers are downward-compatible, so it shouldn't be any issues. I have 3 cameras on my Wi-Fi and they all work without issues and are accessible from virtually anywhere via the myDLink app.

2) After using 3 different brands of Wi-Fi cameras with not-so-good results, I was pleased with my first D-Link camera (942L). It worked without problems; I could always connect to it and it never "disappeared" from the network like the other branded cameras did.
I got these two cameras (5009L) after my positive experience with the 942L.
The setup is very easy if you use the WPS method (WPS buttons on the camera and your router) OR it's pretty self explanatory via conventional setup (with a cable, at first, and then tweak settings via Wi-Fi).
The interface if very intuitive and most functions have explanations. Not hard to figure out.

BONUS: the myDLink app is actually very nice and useful. The interface is very clean and intuitive; you can access all of your connected cameras from the main menu FROM ANYWHERE (including cellular network 3G or LTE - watch your data usage, though!).

Question 7

Is there a way to use this camera without a router? How?

The only other way to connect your DCS camera other than through a router is directly to your PC via an Ethernet cable from the camera directly to an Ethernet card in your computer. This way you are disconnected from any direct connections to the web or remote viewing.

Is there a DVR that is compatible with these cameras?

D-Link offers the  DNR-202L and DNR-322L.

I have 2 of these cameras with the pan/tilt and 8 of their standard cameras without it.  The big advantage of having these is the sound is not muddled; however, the pan/tilt isn't that great.  Instead of scrooling as you pan/tilt....the camera freezes until it is in the new position and then starts reloading.

Does anybody can tell me a recording software for dsc 5009 ip camera?

The firmware is constantly being updated and the camera continuously goes offline. Try AVUE's camera.  It may be a little more expensive, but never acts up or goes down.

Question 10

One responder in the Q&A section mentioned the capability of recording to an SD card.  As this camera keep all of that and if so is there a limit to size of card?  Also, is the antenna removable for higher dBi to replace it?

The 5009  does not use a sd card, and can not record. And there is no other antenna that i am aware of.
