What triggers the alarm? Opening the window or going near the window?

Opening the window triggers the alarm. Just going near the window will not activate anything. The small piece mounts on the frameout jam wall that the window fits into and the larger alarm piece mounts on the actual window frame edge. When the magnetic field is broken as the window is raised the alarm and lights are activated. One word of advice. *If you choose to use the double-sided tape that is provided, you may want to use a couple of drops of strong adhesive glue.* One alarm fell off in the middle of the night which of course broke the magnetic field and caused a false alarm. There is also an optional screw attachment for a more permanent but longer installation should you choose to make holes in the wall.
