Will this work in a basement?

It can work in a basement as long as it can receive a wifi signal and a signal from its sync module. The lithium batteries allow it to be independent of mains (or grid) power - no wall wart. The infra-red capability allows it to "see" in the dark but that means you will get a grey-scale video. If the walls or basement ceiling is so thick or dense that it will not allow a good radio frequency signal to get to the camera, you may be able to put a wifi extender down with it. The sync module may have issues with that or big metal hvac ducting as well.

It can be either, you choose the resolution in settings. The higher the definition the shorter the battery life.
