yes the sub woofer is adjustable thru the settings menu. This unit has it's limits but for the price I am very satisfied. If you are looking to build the ultimate entertainment center i recommend passing this one by but for a small area:dorm room, bedroom, kids room etc. or on a tight budget this unit works above the level of it's small stature. I hope this helps. I am very happy with mine.

Do I need to hook this into a receiver/amp or is it built in and ready to go?

Hook all included speaker wires to the Sony DVD player,hook the included RCA cables to the Sony DVD player,hook the other ends of the RCA cables to one of your TV set's input jacks,plug in the power cord,and get ready to rock! Mute your TV speaker or you will get interference.This system really is nice for the price.

can i take the TV audio to this ?

Yes, I have it set up so sound from the TV plays through the Sony unit. I've attached the red and white jacks of an RCA jack to the back of the Sony unit and the other end of the RCA jack to the red and white audio connections on my ATT U Verse receiver.  When I set the function of the Sony unit to TV-Cable, I can then use the Sony remote to control the TV volume through the Sony unit.  I still have control of the volume on the TV proper with my ATT U Verse remote.

Is it suitable for 220V electrical connection ?

Only with an external 220 to 115 step-down transformer.  The unit is rated for 115 v-ac only (does not have a switching type power supply with the wide input voltage tolerance).

does it integrate with my cable set top box. can i run the hdmi out from the cable into this system then pass the video on thru to the TV?

Yes you can Jay this is exactly how it is setup in my 9 year olds room. Be forewarned though, this is not a loud system (think adult loud) but perfect for young children up to age 18. I would not recommend this for a main room system. Music sounds great through this thing. However, movies and vocals are just not at the level you want it at sometimes. Perfect for kids though as I mentioned earlier. I got mine for $39 a few months back. For that price I can't complain because it was a steal at that price and my son loves it. Hope this helps!

does it play divix  avi or xvid formats ?

Yes it can play divx, xvid and avi. Make sure the codecs. Are right though (on the file in question) because sometimes the synch will be off. You can watch from burned dvd's or USB drive on the front.

No its not a blu ray player but the system its self is pretty weak i would only buy it if your looking for something for a smaller room other then thats its sounds great though and the DVD play back is scaled up to 1080p

I've been looking for a DVD player that holds multiple DVDs , my current 12 yr old Sony DAV-DX150 unit holds 5.  Does this one? Beginning to wonder if they even make this dinosaur feature any longer... This DAV has been a warrior...but getting tired and flakey on occasion.

in the age of MP3 music and Bluetooth why would anyone care about any size or capacity of CDs can be used. 
For my money, I use this system with an inexpensive Bluetooth receiver and streaming any online/stored choice of music I desire through my Smartphone or laptop to this very reasonable quality system, I benefit greatly from the sound that was "Bought for a song"

How many hdmi inputs does this have?

This system is like may low end DVD players, it is designed to do everything so no inputs. For this reason I purchased an AV Receiver in combination. I hook HDMI out into my Sony STR-DH520 also from Neweggs Refurb line, it has 3 input and 3 output slots plus RCA in and out, speakers out, also in 5.1. The DAVTZ140 make a great stand alone but has limits. The only thing it lacks is Blue Ray. Hope this helps.
