Can I schedule a DVD recording to run while we are out shopping??

Yes, just set the recorder to record your show as you would normally do (follow the instructions in the users manual). When you're finished setting your recorder be sure your cable box is also set to go to the correct channel at the correct time. Then be sure to turn the recorder off or it will not record your show

does the unit come with a remote?

Yes. By the way, I have had a couple of these machines crap out on me so I would definitely suggest getting an extended warranty, even though in most cases this is usually a ripoff. I am also amazed how the price tag on these has recently tripled. Good luck.

is the Toshiba dr430 recorder brand new in the box?

The unit I purchased was brand new in the box.  It was delivered on time and worked properly by following the owners manual.

my satellite cable has threads on it.  How would I hook this player to my satellite and then to the tv?

I am sorry, I do not use my recorder in that manner. my recorder inputs are connected to the outputs from a VCR and I am just using the recorder to copy some family video tapes.  I plan on using it to record live TV from the output of my Sony TV when my tape archives are complete, but not to a satellite box.

1)You need a tuner to connect between your satellite or cable signals and run the outputs from the tuner to the recorder. The TV should be able to to connect to the HDMI output of the recorder if you want to view the satellite program while you are recording.

2)Did you try connecting the satellite coaxial cable directly to the TV cable input,  and connect your recorder to the video and audio outputs from your TV?  That would be simpler and would not require an additional tuner.

Can I use this DVD recorder to record regular programs from TV? I just bought a New Samsung smart TV and TV is connected to a cable thru HDMI connection?

Hi Patricia,
I have mine hooked up to a Samsung Smart TV and YES you can record tv programs, BUT.....I have Comcast cable and they BLOCK some channels from being recorded. I am not sure how they do this but the DVD player will display a message stating "it cannot record error".  Bottom line, yes it will record some channels....usually local stations. Premium channels and movies are usually "blocked".

Also, the manual is somewhat confusing. It took me quite some time before I understood most of it, so be patient with yourself.

can this unit record from a sony high 8 handy cam and make dvd?

Whether this unit will record from a SONY Hi 8 Handy Cam I wouldn't know.  I only record TV programs received from a roof antenna.

This DR430 is the second one for me.  The first lasted two years before a capacitor shorted to ground at the input plug.  The replacement was cheaper than having it repaired.

CAN I COPY THE RECORDED DVD MADE ON THIS PLAYER?

From what I have read from others who have purchased this DVR, yes you can make copies from this DVR. The manual states that you can do also. I have yet to try. Hope this helps!

The s video input on both my DR430 is not funtioning. Is there a specfic setting for the recorder to enable the use of the s video in?

Perhaps you need to ensure that the Line input channel (L1 or L2) is correctly set.  I've got mine set up to record from the A/V for coaxial connection from a sat receiver.  The S video is for video, but you would still need the audio connection for sound.  Hope that helps...Good Luck!

Does this recorder have a hookup for a cord with a small square fitting with an indentation on one side of the square fixture?  It could be called an SB cord, but even though I have the cord I can't remember what it was for sure.

Hi, No, nothing like you describe. The only type of cord I can figure you are talking about may be IR optical cord. That's a light pipe for a digital audio signal which some DVD players have. It is sometimes called a TOSLINK cable.  I also do not recall hearing about any any type of SB cord. Also you can download the owners manual & look at the rear panel view.
