The name “Monitor” is special to Polk Audio. The original Polk Audio Monitor Series, produced in the mid-1970s, ushered in the modern loudspeaker era by setting the standard for performance and value. The original Monitor Series is the line that made Polk Audio famous with its simple, sturdy construction, clear, accurate sound, powerful bass and superior imaging—all at a price that made great sound available to everyone. The newly reborn Monitor Series II is classic Polk: a quality-built, affordable line of high performance loudspeakers for music and home theater.

They are highly efficient, so they can be driven easily by unpretentious receivers, and they are voice matched for lifelike surround sound environments. The Monitor Series boasts a stylish contemporary look, with real wood veneer finishes, modern dark grey faces, and bold stabilizer feet on the tower models. Built for speed, sound quality and value, the Monitor Series is a great introduction to high performance sound.

Satisfied with my purchase.

Pros: Sound Great, decent mix of highs mids and lows.
They came undamaged, they were packaged with reinforced cardboard corners likely to prevent the damaged grills that everyone else has complained about, it definitely helped keep the box sturdy and less damaged.
At $158 and free shipping these arrived in 2 days so it was a great deal for the quality this product delivers.

Cons: There is some literature that came along with the speakers but it only shows 1 of the 5 methods for hookups to the terminals and doesn't put much more detail about bi-wiring and bi-amping other than a single picture. For people unfamiliar with this it would be nice to have something with a little more detail. This info can all be found with a couple quick google searches though.

Overall Review: I had a pair of Monitor 40s as my front speakers and moved them to the rear and put these 70s in the front. All around my system sounds crisper and louder at a slightly lower volume on the receiver than it needed to be before. I was surprised at the amount of bass they produced after reading some reviews from people saying they produced less or no bass frequencies, either they had a bad receiver or got a bad set delivered to them.
Given the value and quality of these I might be buying another pair of 70s in the future to replace the 40s, which by no means sound bad, but just don't put out as much sound as these.

Polk Monitor 70

Pros: Clean, Efficient, Versatile floorstanding speakers. They take up very little floor space because of the vertical design. I use them in connection with Onkyo TX SR608 and in addition to the Polk Series 705 Home theater speaker set up. I had planned to use them with a separate sub in a zone 2 for my music as opposed to the 7.2 home theater but they are very capable of the whole range of tasks from late night low volume to full all out..I took advantage of a similar sale here at new egg and could not be more happy with the outcome. They are actually huge speakers and weigh in over 40# each but they seem to fit in nicely in my small tv room since they are built upward. The sound is big speaker depth and very clean will handle the coloring directions of your amps, can be bi ampped with the 5way mount posts...use banana plugs or hole and screw posts. There is no way to put the value into perspective for under $200 each you get nearly high end sound performance and good solid construction.

Cons: Connection posts could be better though they are just fine and not really a con but am required to use space. For the sale prices there are no cons for this particular item. crossovers work well , construction is solid and they are worth every penny of the sale cost the feet could be adjustable for uneven hard flooring, otherwise they are designed very well for carpets coming to a tapered point. I guess that is the only thing I saw that could have been offered along with connection post upgrade.

Overall Review: These speakers deliver great sound and great value. Speaker preference is very subjective and one person will hear the same sounds differently ...some people have hollower heads, some people have bigger and acoustically designed rooms, and who know how many other variables there are? It is personal thing in the end once basic criteria are met and these Polk 70 Monitor series to that. Flat, colored bass or treble aside , these will provide entry level and value conscious connoisseurs will appreciate what these offer and are one of a very few to consider when looking to begin or expand your Home Theater or entertainment rack.

UPDATE
Over the past 8 years i have used the set if 2 daily. I use them at very low level highly compressed 'night time' as well as directly from a blu ray, dvd/cd audio modes. they remain crisp and clear at mid range and sparkle at the highest ranges the bass reproduction is great. i have a sub woofer but these 2 can stand alone as a pair for just music as in the 'old' LP sound reproduction. i know there are higher calibre speakers and will pick up more detail and crank higher than these . but in the real world of listening to movies, 7.2 , as well as 2 and 3 speaker 'stereo' sounds these particular speakers perform day in and day out at the price that is easy to live with. they stay slightly 'colored' as polks are the port system sounds as good today they did day one. i still have them paired to an Onkyo Tx SR608 in a 7.1 set up. i would be able to hear this system across the street without crackle and pops but what i appreciate is the ability to play at low and midranges with perfect reproduction after a good number of years. i have decided to postpone upgrading twice already to the atmos trend. so these speakers are staying round here longer yet. they move around easily too and the narrow footprint is well appreciated too. hard to go wrong at this price. only regret was not getting the 'cherry ' wood finish. which i dont see advertised here anyhow.

If they arrive undamaged by shipper, your more the exception than the rule

Pros: Clear and clean. replaced Cerwin Vega AT-15's and room looks alot larger now. I got used to the horn tweeter in the Cerwin Vegas and at low volume, these M-70's sound muffled when watching TV or DVD movies. crank the knob to "wake up" the tweeters.

Cons: of course the shipper damaged them. what's new.

Overall Review: I'm partial to the Cerwin Vegas simply because I had them since 1988. I'm used to them. they sound the same at low volumes as the do at high volume. I have a CS2 series II center (discontinued) and a Klipsch Reference RW-12d 12" Powered Sub. all from Newegg.

8 years of ownership (original Monitor 70's Cherry)

Pros: In June of 2010 I purchased 2 Monitor 70's for my front channels, 2 Monitor 60's for surrounds, and a CS2 center channel, all with the cherry veneer finish. I found that after adding an Adcom GFA 5500 for the Monitor 70's two years ago (in addition to an Onkyo TX-NR809 as a pre-amp) the 70's really opened up and delivered some pretty decent low end. Moral of the story - if you deliver at least 200 WPC to these speakers, you'll be happy. I do have a Velodyne DPS-12 for a sub, but the 70's will go down to about 40Hz -if you give them sufficient power. And when newegg puts the original 70's or the Series II on sale for under 200, snag 'em.

Cons: Wish that Polk offered metal grill covers - cats like using the cloth grill covers for scratching posts. Replacements are reasonable priced.

Overall Review: Highly recommended if you have champagne tastes on a beer budget. Would buy again for $149 each

Good speakers but lack of bass

Pros: High and mid sound great with this price range. A best buy.

Cons: Bass sound is very weak from the speaker. You need a subwoofer to bring music to full. there are 12" cuts on each side of the boxes. The deliver people cut them to put hands in the box to carry them. The speakers inside were fine. But that should not be happened

Overall Review: Great speakers with Great price, definitely need a sub. Delivery was very not as proper as it should be.
