So is this a stand alone VR or do you have to have a smartphone (ex. Samsung phone) to use it?

This headset is required to be used with one of the compatible Galaxy phones (Note5, S6 edge+, S6, or S6 edge) ONLY. The phone connects to the headset and you use the touchpad or a Bluetooth controller (purchased separately) to interact with the device.

Question 2

Is this the model with the micro USB charging port on the under side, below the touchpad?  The previous models didn't have a way to supply power to the phone for longer use, but I saw on Samsung's site that their latest model has the place to plug in a charger.  Thanks!

This one does have the port, although I've not tried it.  I've only used this for short periods and the lack of cables is a plus.

does it work with the note 7?

The one in the picture...the white and black 2015 model  DOES NOT work with the Note 7,  Samsung has a new one Samsung Gear VR 2016 . The new one is all dark blue and this model works perfect.........just make sure you have the 2016 model (all dark blue)

Question 4

Does this allow full 16:9 aspect ratio of 1920 x 1080 or does it squish the  image into a 4:3 square like Google cardboard.?
