I understand there is a built in antenna, but the picture also shows an extra antenna that plugs into the TV, does it indeed come with that?

Mine came with a little "hershey kiss" magnet mount mini whip. It won't work well for most people. I would suggest having at least a little "blade type" flat indoor antenna backup, even in the city. The TV has a standard 75 ohm cable jack.

what channels and how many would i be able to receive on this?

The Channels you receive will depend on your provider/subscription(cable/Dish etc)

It is capable of displaying what your subscription is via your Provider Tuner just as any TV

Now I have used mine with antennae as well, It picks up about 62 channels Via that method for me

Of further note I am quite impressed with the Picture quality, for the Price it is a Bargain in my opinion :)
