can the base be removed?

Yes.  The base is actually not attached at all.  It comes together with the screen inside the packaging.  It allows for you to buy a separate type of base mount or wall mount if you wish to go that route.  The base that is provided requires a 1 minute set up and attachment. It is both sturdy and reliable.

Question 2

Is there a wall mount kit for this TV?

I don't use one. The TV didn't come with one. But, the manual says there's one available from Samsung. The manual says to call customer care at 1-800-SAMSUNG (726-7864). The TV is VESA compliant, so that means it should take a 'standard' wall mount. The four-bolt pattern is 400mm x 400mm and the screws are "M8" (that's a metric screw), and that's for the 46" - 65" class models. If you go to a well equipped home theater store, you're likely to find a generic mount.

IS this item new? The price is severely discounted from that sold elsewhere?

It's new. The model is marked down as the new models release in March so I was told by another vendor. 
Great TV. 
The only thing missing is bluetooth which I understand is on all new TV's but that isn't a deal breaker. I recommend this set especially if you have a home wi fi network and want to stream movies from your PC.
