is this factory refurbished?

These are refurbished by a Microsoft Approved refurbisher, Joy Computer. We have bought 6 of them and had one bad one out of the box. The bad item was prompty replaced with no problems. These are a good basic laptop for the price. SSD installed so no mechanical drive to go bad. Be aware of the 180GB drive size. That works for us but not if you store huge amounts of files.

Is there an available slot with which to add RAM?

Both slots are usually taken. I opened all of mine to add more RAM from another Laptop, but both slots were filled on all of them

Does this have a back-lit keyboard?

Yes, however, the model I ordered had a thumb print scanner in the description, but they were out of stock. They called me the day after I ordered it to ask if I needed it.

Yes. I'm not sure if it's HD or SD, but it's above the screen.
