Question 1

Will this drive burn 4k blu-rays?  I know it will require extra software to do so, but I have that software already.

So I've made several attempts, but I get an error message when I try and Rip movies in 4k.  My purchase for this was to just so I can pull movies into a tablet for air travel, so I wasn't too concerned with 4k compatibility.

Is this unit true 4k or upscaling?

This is just an external USB optical drive; it supports 4k (or UHD) Bluray disks in the sense that it can read them. However, to play 4k/UDH Bluray disks in Windows you will need an Intel 7xxx, 8xxx, or 9xxx class CPU, a motherboard that supports SGX, compatible 4k display and cables (must use the Intel graphics for output), and compatible playback software (like PowerDVD 18 Ultra). When you have all of the above, you will be able to use this drive to play 4k/UHD Bluray disks on your Windows PC - with no "upscaling". Depending on the software you use, it may be able to upscale 1080p/720p Bluray disks and DVDs to 4k. Getting 4k/UHD disk playback working on Windows requires some specific hardware and planning ahead - I would highly recommend doing some research before hand.

Does this work on a mac?

Although the box it came in doesn't list MAC OSs - On the Lite-on website, under the specification tab for this product (EB1)  It show the Mac as being a compatible OS.

Question 4

Does anybody know if this unit is region free? I have some Blue ray's from the UK, and not sure if this unit is capable of playing that region, since I bought this in the US.

Don't know, but, beware that this unit will not play blue ray dvds without an upgrade to the media software that comes with it.  Yes, you will need to buy an additional media upgrade which will cost you an extra $90.   So, I would not recommend it.
