1. How far away can sensors be from the central station? 2. Can it be set to have an door open/close chime in an adjacent building?

Depends on how far away the adjacent building is. They have another product called the "Nest Connect" that works as a range extender for contact sensors as well as the Yale lock. I cannot give you an exact distance on how far away but they do go a decent distance and still work. If you have a non-attached garage or in-law suite in the backyard, I would say this should still work so long as you use one of those nest connects somewhere in your home at the closest point possible to the outbuilding.
