Question 1

Why is the size of each SSD (in the 6-bay version) limited to 4TB?  Is this a limitation of the device's operating system?  Does this limitation apply when the SSDs are in JBOD mode?  Thanks.

It isn’t limited. The NVME hardware that links the PCI slot to the motherboard has no size limitation. M2 2280 specifies the size/form factor—not storage size/limitation.

I purchased the six slot unit over a year ago. Back then, there was a question whether or not the 4TB 2280s would work. Asustor’s position is that the 6 and 12 bay/slot units might or might not work with all (then emerging) 4TB 2280s from all vendors. I used TeamGroup 2280s which had not been tested at that time by Asustor. But the TeamGroup 4TB 2280 faithfully implemented the PCI 4.0 standard and all worked well.

There aren’t many 8TB 2280s on the market yet, and fully populating a six slot Flashstor could cost $3-5K. So, there probably aren’t too many owners who’ve tried them out yet.  You can probably populate all six slots with 8TB devices, if you’ve got the cash.

The flastor support site has a supported matrix tool to sort by size and brand. I use team group mp44 4tb sticks in it but it supports the 8tb sticks too at the time of writing this.

as deployed, i have 4 sticks of team group MP44 in raid 5 with 0 hot spare configured for 11TB of storage with built in protection for 1 drive..

Does the FS6706T support RAID5 and RAID6? The info on the web page describes RAID levels but in the general sense. It doesn't specifically state that the FS6706T can be configured IN RAID5 or RAID6.
