Looking at the low reviews, is it possible I need a special Charger for these?

It may be possibly that different types of batteries require different charging rates. As all battery chemical formulations and physical constructions have changed over the years,  some have vastly improved,  I tend to agree with other answers in that it is probably best to get the designated charger for the type of battery you currently use. I think there are many smart chargers on the market that fit the bill.

I have a 12-port AA/AAA smart charger that also discharges the older rechargeables that need to be discharged to maintain their specified lifecycle and give better performance for fewer charges inbetween. I have witnessed that older 1000-charge and newer Eneloop batteries  charge at different rates in this device. Hope this helps.

What's the longest life cycle you've witnessed from Eneloop AAA batteries? Is it really 2100 charges, more or less?

I've had these eneloop batteries for about 22 months and I've charged them about 50-60 times and they seem to last the same amount of time after every charge although I use mainly the AA batteries.

2100 seems like an eternity for these batteries  -- it would take me 60 years to use it that much for me .
