Do you need software for this movie box?

Hi,
It comes with complete video editing software from Pinnacle that is very good and it also contains 3rd party software for adding  special affects. I am glad I purchased it. But haven't been able to play with it. Sorry it took so long. I had surgery in November  and have been in hospitals and care facilities ever since. I got permission to leave and go home for a couple of hours today for the first time. I haven't been home since 1st of December. I did look at it for a few minutes.

Will this work with XP sp3?

It should work well with Windows XP SP3. The specifications on the package (Studio MovieBox Ultimate Collection and the included  Pinnacle Studio V.15) are:

Win 7, Vista (SP2), or XP (SP3)
Pentium II or Athlon 1.8GHz. (2.4GHz recommended.)
1GB RAM (2GB for AVCHD)
DirectX 9 or 10 compatible graphics card w/64MB RAM (128 recommended or 256MB for HD and AVCHD )
DirectX 9 or higher sound card
3.6GB of disk space
DVD-ROM drive to install the software
1 USB 2.0 port.

And of course anything better would help.

Is it a new or used? Which version is this is it latest version or old one? Please confirm.

Yes, it's brand new  (as long as you're asking about condition). Version is rather old...number of versions behind what's currently offered by Corel. As a matter of fact version included isn't supported by Corel/Pinnacle duo anymore. According to label applied to product's box free upgrade is available, but like other reviewers mentioned - link doesn't work anymore, so you're stuck with what's in the box.

That I do not know. I use windows 7 pro. Usually the software and drivers will work as windows has made almost everything migratable from 7 to 8. On the other hand, it is a fantastic product

Does this work with Windows 8?

The printed material that comes with the unit specifies minimum system requirements as Windows XP, Vista and 7.  The current specs on the Pinnacle website also include Windows 8 in compatible systems.  So it should work fine with Windows 8.  Mine works well with my Windows XP Pro and my 1T hard drive.
Be aware that any video editing chews up large amounts of hard drive storage.  These systems take in the entire recorded program to our C drive, then also store the edited versions we create, then sometimes store them again in project files while we write to discs.  So unless your hard drive is 250 GB or better you will find yourself unable to manipulate your larger video files.  Consider upgrading your hard drive to a 1 or 2 Terrabyte unit along with the purchase of a video editor like Pinnacle.

I have Media Composer 7 on a HP Pavilion laptop. With this unit allow me to capture video off of my Canon GL2?

This product has not worked a lick since I purchased it.  I just regret that I haven't had time to call the company and complain and return it.  Very disappointed.  Tried several methods of connecting my DV JVC camcorder so I could transfer family videos but getting nowhere.  Looked all over for a firewire adapter cable and spent big $ on it - didn't work at all.  Very Very disappointed.

Can you control the camcorders start, stop, and record from your computer as you could if connected to fire wire on the computer?

I have this unit and it works fine. I do not have a fireware interface, but can see nothing in the software to allow you to do any type of control of the source with any of the inputs. So you have to start and stop both the computer Moviebox and camera separately. Not a big deal really as you can trim the ends of the clip easily if need be, So just start the source first, then the studio.. Really not hard to be quite seamless doing both steps. Hope this helps!

Can you record and capture video straight from your PC with this? For instance could I record myself playing a game on my PC and capture the video footage?

While the "Pinnacle Studio MovieBox Ultimate Collection - Capture and Edit HD video 8230-10068-41 USB 2.0 Interface" is a great 'interface' to clean up and edit analog & digital recordings; same is not used for recording game-playing on a PC.  I'd recommend using 'beepa Fraps 3.5.99' software loaded (directly) onto your computer.  [You can download a trial version ... from the source.] If this works for you; a full-version license is very affordable.

BTW; I purchased two (2) of the Pinnacle items, from NewEgg, during December of 2013, and I'm very satisfied using both for what they're intended for.

Comes with Pinnacle Studio v. 14.  Note that this is a discontinued product with an older version of Pinnacle Studio.  Note also that Pinnacle is now a part of Corel.  Corel is providing support for this device and the associated software at this time.
