Could small animals (cats) activate the alarm?

There's a sensitivity adjustment to prevent that from happening. If you have it set correctly for the size of your pet(s) and have it placed where they can't walk directly in front of it (e.g., on a counter they like to jump on), then it should be fine. I have a cat and she hasn't set it off.
