does this work as a stand alone for answering, eg... do you need a handset lifter. can you use this with another phone eg dial someone then pickup this headset and be online?

You will either need a handset lifter or a special cable to go from the handset base to the wireless base. The cable allows you to just hit the button on the headset and answer calls without the need of a lifter or manually lifting the handset. The headset beeps in your ear letting you know you have a call if you are away from your desk. And the range with these are excellent.

Would this headset be compatable with and iphone?

No. This is neither accepts USB or Bluetooth to connect to a PC.

Does this product ship with an included charging dock / station that allows it to connect to a ShoreTel 230 deskphone? Plantronics  lists this Model: CS530 Part Number: 86305-01 as compatible but I want to make sure it ships with all included equipment before purchasing. Thanks!

Is not internally powered.  no need for charging station.  Comes with two 3.5mm cords.
