Quick answer YES it comes with a remote that controls volume, on/off, sets up the clock functions, changes audio input selection (am/fm/iPod/aux/etc.) and will skip/backup pause iPod selections This unit is the best table top unit around. I had a BOSE wave radio and this Polk beats it hands down. The sound that comes out of this unit is incredible. It is clear, crisp highs and the bass is decent for a small unit. I like it so much I bought a second one. One for my house and one for my camper.

Does the ipod stay charged while connected?

It charges my iPhone 4, an iPhone 4S, and an iPod nano 6th gen (square touchscreen). (others with a 30-pin connector, too, I assume, but not sure) (no lightning connector on this unit)  By the way, the Polk display also gives a bare-bones but nice readout of the artist / track info when the iPod / iPhone is playing music through the Polk system.

will it work for iphone 5?

Yes it will, but you will have to buy a "lightning" 6 pin to 30 pin adaptor on line for about $10.  
This is a great unit:  as good as Bose (I've owned both)
and at $69 (with rebate ) the best price I've seen.  
I've bought 2 @ $99 and was thinking about buying another one for a gift.

Is the radio hd FM and stereo?

Yes, it is definitely Stereo as I just tested on an FM station and some good headphones. Great stereo sound.One failing of this unit is its unable to properly tune to AM stations that do not have a frequency that is a  multiple of 10.  I want to tune to AM612  but can only tune to either AM610 or AM620. Crazy.

Does it have bluetooth connectivity or only thru the dock?

The Polk unit I purchased does not have Bluetooth connectivity but that does not preclude more current units from having it.  I love it because it filled the need I was looking for.  Great sound, easy to use, versatile...all good.

Does this unit play cds?

No, the unit does not play CDs; nor does it have a port for connecting/playing flash media directly (i.e., apart from the ipod/iphone dock.) 
  
Also N.B.: the NewEgg webpage listed specs: 4.38" x 4.25" x 9.56" (H x W x D) are wrong.  The radio's width is not 4.25" but rather fourteen (14) inches.

can you change the batteries?

I'm not sure what you are asking, as far as I know there are no batteries to replace. My guess is that a special circuit is used to to hold all the saved stations as well as the time settings.

Can you dock an iPod touch 5th generation?

No, this is only for up to the fourth generation.  You would need to get an adapter for the connection....you cant replace the existing connector.

I purchased it for the radio...it sounds beautiful with great bass.

Does this work with both iPad 2 and iPhone 5?

It will work with iPad 2 with an extension, the iPad it too large to fit in the concaved section the dock is located. The radio will only work with an iPhone 5 if you purchase a 30pin to lightning adapter. Out of the box it doesn't have compatibility with lightning products without and adapter.

Of course either could be used by hooking them up with a stereo 3.5mm cable, but you would lose charge and remote control ability by doing this.

will this work with an iphone 5 or 5s ?   if so,, all parts needed in the box?

It might and no.  The I-Sonic has the old 30 pin connector.  The iPhone 5/5s has a Lighting connector.  Without an adaptor (which none are included), it will not be compatible other than using the aux input and headphone output on the phone.  Apple does make/sell a 30 pin-to-Lightning adaptor plug, but I'm unsure if all functionality comes through.  With an iPod Classic and 3rd gen iPod touch, the unit works great.
