G.Skill RAM FTW!

G.SKILL 16GB (2 x 8GB) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Laptop Memory Model F3-10666CL9D-16GBSQ
G.SKILL 16GB (2 x 8GB) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Laptop Memory Model F3-10666CL9D-16GBSQ

Pros: 16GB of RAM allows one to do quite a few things - all at the same time! One of the best upgrades for any computer/laptop (aside from maybe an SSD) but definitely the best from a multi-tasking standpoint. Lifetime warranty, high-quality materials and fast!

Cons: None.

Overall Review: I recommend (and personally use) G.Skill RAM on all my Mac and PC computers. There aren't enough good things that I can say about this RAM. From quality to support to end-use, this product always shines! Now if I could only get a MBP that supports 32GB of RAM!

The heart for a DYI emulator HTPC

ECS CDC-M/D2550(1.0) Intel Atom D2550 Intel NM10 Micro ATX Motherboard / CPU / VGA Combo

Pros: I was looking for a small, all-inclusive motherboard that had all the necessary ports & connections on-board. Due to the size of the case I was working with (an 8-bit NES shell) this board met all of the component requirements, plus included a few extras like wi-fi.

Cons: None.

Overall Review: Cool running, stable board. Additionally, it came with a mail-in rebate (which I received almost immediately). Couldn't be happier.

External enclosure with a heart of gold

VANTEC NST-266S3-SV Aluminum / Plastic 2.5" Silver SATA I/II/III USB 3.0 External Hard Drive Enclosure
VANTEC NST-266S3-SV Aluminum / Plastic 2.5" Silver SATA I/II/III USB 3.0 External Hard Drive Enclosure

Pros: Rescued a client's working hard drive from their laptop that was declared a biohazard (long story) and was pleasantly surprised that the aluminum case booted up the drive quickly and efficiently, while keeping the drive cool under performance loads. Stress tested the enclosure on both USB 2.0 and 3.0 buses and after about 48 hours, it was still humming along without so much as a hiccup.

Cons: None.

Overall Review: Small + lightweight + efficient + inexpensive = happy clients! Also, bus-powered, which means no additional power cable to carry around.

Excellent RAM for Apple computers

G.SKILL 16GB (2 x 8GB) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Laptop Memory Model F3-10666CL9D-16GBSQ
G.SKILL 16GB (2 x 8GB) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Laptop Memory Model F3-10666CL9D-16GBSQ

Pros: 16GB of RAM at an incredible price + G.Skill's brand of quality - which is quite high in my experience.

Cons: None.

Overall Review: I've been using G.Skill for years now to upgrade RAM on PC's and Apple devices and I have yet to be dissatisfied! Their memory chips are fast and stable, perfect for just about any application. Additionally, the lifetime warranty (that I've never had to use by the way) is just peace of mind. Now if they only had 32GB of RAM in SO-DIMM :)

Stable, inexpensive board for HTPC

ECS CDC-M/D2550(1.0) Intel Atom D2550 Intel NM10 Micro ATX Motherboard / CPU / VGA Combo

Pros: Small form factor, great warranty, low power consumption and just about everything you might need onboard.

Cons: None really come to mind.

Overall Review: <rant>I really wish motherboard vendors would finally remove legacy components/connectors from their boards. Aside from the size issues, it's about time they do away with these types of connectors. It took eons for them to ditch the bus mouse interface. </rant>

DOA...unfortunately!

ZOTAC GF6100-E-E AM3 (up to 65 watt TDP) / AM2+ / AM2 NVIDIA nForce 430 MCP Mini ITX AMD Motherboard
ZOTAC GF6100-E-E AM3 (up to 65 watt TDP) / AM2+ / AM2 NVIDIA nForce 430 MCP Mini ITX AMD Motherboard

Pros: Small form factor, perfect fit for the HP Slimline series right down to the headers for power, USB, etc.

Cons: DOA. Right out of the box doing exactly the same as the board it was replacing (no POST). It uses the Geforce 6100 series video chipset (see horrible) which is well-documented to have issues. It's not Zotac's fault (engineering-wise), it s nVidia's for creating such a faulty product, but I had to RMA it either way.

Overall Review: This is unfortunate because I really wanted to like the board. It was inexpensive, had enough ports for the system it was going into (HP Slimline s7600n) and fit like a dream. As an added note, HP uses proprietary PSU connectors on their SFF computers. This poses a problem when upgrading to this (or any other) 3rd-party board. The solution? Buy a new PSU or search for an adapter (10-pin to 20+4-pin) which should be found for under $10 and this will resolve the issue straight away.
