Most Favorable Review

4 years and still ticking

MSI G41M4-F LGA 775 Intel G41 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
MSI G41M4-F LGA 775 Intel G41 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: I put this in a Mini ATX case with an Intel Q6600 and aside from dusting it out from time to time, this little board has never failed me. Used as a home server, it is tucked in a closet and the only time it goes down is when there is when a power outage maxes out my UPS. I upgraded to max mem, HD and put in a DVD R/W over the years. It was a good purchase 4 years ago.

Cons: If it would support more mem, that would have been nice.

Overall Review: Seeing this has served me well for an inexpensive board, I should have written this up 4 years ago!

Most Critical Review

Unbelievable support

LACIE 2000385 Diskless System 5big Network 2
LACIE 2000385 Diskless System 5big Network 2

Pros: NAS. Raid 5 redundancy. UPNP. In their defense, I have to say "Jon" was very patient, but totally useless.

Cons: I can't tell you how much frustration I am having with this company. If you are totally in Linux of Mac, you will have better luck, but if you are a total win dependent user this is totally ugly. Bought this "thing" when my external raid5 (Venus T5... don't buy) totally puked the stripe so bad I could not recover 2.8TB of media files. Everything was just dandy at first. Then came the update. Not only did it kill my access to managing my content, tech support said the firmware was not reversible and there was no ETA on a fix. It's been over a week now. Before they knew it was a firmware problem, they had me back up my entire collection (1.2TB that I re-uploaded fresh from my DVD collection) to an external drive. I went through their procedure to "reset" the device... which was totally ineffective. Then they notified me there were "issues" with the last firmware update and that they were working on a fix.... but they could not give me a time line. When the last firmware was applied, I lost access to all my audio file (56gb). Video files were still accessible. I could add files, but recently when trying to do an incremental back up, I was unable to. Wrote tech support, and they had the audacity to tell me NOW (which is not in their documentation) that incremental was only supported "incremental backup function will only work with external drives that are formatted for EXT3, EXT4, or XFS".

Overall Review: I can't tell you how at every turn of this adventure has turned into a total management nightmare. Do NOT purchase this thing if you run anything Microsoft.... it is just totally useless. I am so done with this. I'm sending it back.

Frustrating at first

LACIE 2000385 Diskless System 5big Network 2
LACIE 2000385 Diskless System 5big Network 2

Pros: Raid 5.Quiet. Runs cool. This is not a beginner device, and their tech support assumes you are a novice at most things. I can't complain, I had problems setting it up initially. I popped in 5 1tb drives and set it to Raid5. It built the array, then 10 hours later found a fault issue with ID 03. I replaced it and let it rebuild and didn't loose any data.

Cons: However, Lacie pushed an update that I think p_ssed a lot of people off. I should have known better than to just update right off the cuff and wait till I checked their boards for complaints. As a result, I lost the web file browser function for more than a week. When I contacted their tech support, I was outraged to find you could not roll the update back like a regular bios flash, so I went without being able to do remote access through web. I hope they don't do that again. I'd sell the thing in a heartbeat to go through that a second time.

Overall Review: Since the initial pain the device has worked flawlessly. I won't let it sleep just because I don't trust it enough to do that. I find web browsing sluggish, but it will stream my music collection remotely. I have gotten wiser and have a backup that does incremental. The blue light up front is bright, but you can go to the power config and turn it off. Once you get it up and going, I think you would be happy with it, but it is not for newbies.

Use it and keep riding the updates

ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime 1GB Memory 10.1" 1280 x 800 Transformer Prime - Gray Android 3.2 Honeycomb Platform (upgradable to 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich)

Pros: I "played" with many tablets before making my purchase. I knew there were issues, but even a new PC can cause headaches. I'm sorry for all the people that did not get a Prime that did not work to expectations. From the word "sold", the unit I had hasn't hiccuped once, even with ECS. The screen is beautiful and responsive; the apps are adequate; battery life is excellent (and outstanding when paired with the docking station). I get a solid connection even to some unsecured hood AP's. Pairs well with my LG Optimus V (hahah... who says technology hasn't a sense of humor) and GPS works ok with the last firmware update.

Cons: The VPN clients refuse to work with the work environment. I have read that the Galaxy 10.1 does or so it's been reported. Cisco gave a stamp to theirs. VPN is vital to my work. Eventually it will be upgraded to AnyConnect, but for the moment I'm limited.

Overall Review: I'm sorry so many purchasers have had such rotten luck with either the device or Asus support. This gem has been disappearing from many online stores just because of these issues. Apparently, it is the luck of the draw. The manufacturing doesn't seem to be inconsistent from one batch to the next outside the wifi/gps problems. I'm not a big gamer, but what has been programmed for the Tegra 3 rivals some games made for a full PC. Asus was the first one out of the chute and early adopters will always find problems, I'm surprised there weren't more.

Quite Nice

Rosewill R5601-BK 0.8mm Japanese Cold Rolled Steel Screw-less Dual 120mm Fans ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
Rosewill R5601-BK 0.8mm Japanese Cold Rolled Steel Screw-less Dual 120mm Fans ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: This case has everything where you want it. The usb, firewire and audio, floppy and optical are up high so that if the system sits on the floor you don't have to hassle with the usual mount that are normally located at the bottom of most cases. I was also pleased with the size of the side proc vent, so much that I didn't feel the need to remove the shrouds on the inside. The side mount to the hard drives was nice, and rails for the optical were easy to figure out. All in all, a solid case, and I will be using it again.

Cons: Some spots were not folded and could possibly slash your fingers if not careful. The optical front plat made more noise, and sometimes would stick. The front audio plug, tho matched the motherboard, wouldn't pass the signal to the front - so, was unable to get headphones to work. Case is a little long. This case is HEAVY!

Overall Review: I found this case, outside the fact that the front audio didn't work, would be perfect for most users.

It works

Hauppauge Personal Video Recorder 99016 USB 2.0 Interface
Hauppauge Personal Video Recorder 99016 USB 2.0 Interface

Pros: Definitely a Media Center gadget. Vista discovered the device and installed it's own drivers. The remote fires everything up correctly and managing the potential of this device is quite easy. The extra inputs on the device accommodate an assortment of video sources and the sound is good. Integrates well.

Cons: Ok, where do I begin. XP didn't like the drivers on the disk at all. Called tech support and took 20 mins to walk through upgrading drivers and installing in a highly specific order (full updates on XP). Media Center has proprietary encoding, so I had difficulties capping and then playing on anything else. Video would not convert. Frustration level in XP (non media center) = 8 out of 10.

Overall Review: Kinda stupid in my opinion to have a 2 devices with this unit: One for the tuner, the other for the remote. Should have combined them in my opinion.

You get what you pay for... sometimes you get more

Got this, plugged it in, hooked it up, powered it on and just walked my 5 string bass all over my house. No static, not drops and it even gets the low B. I thought this was pricy at the start by gave it a chance and glad I did! Well worth the investment.
