Instant Suicide

PC Power & Cooling ModXStream Pro Series 500 Watt 80+ Semi-Modular Active PFC Performance Grade ATX PC Power Supply (OCZ500MXSP)
PC Power & Cooling ModXStream Pro Series 500 Watt 80+ Semi-Modular Active PFC Performance Grade ATX PC Power Supply (OCZ500MXSP)

Pros: It wasn't a murder+suicide. See other thoughts.

Cons: After completing an all new build for a friend (my 6th or 7th overall) I plugged in the power supply and flipped the switch on the back expecting to be ready for the first boot. That's not what I got. What did happen was that the power supply made a flash accompanied by a loud POP. That startling event was immediately followed by the unmistakable smell of the magic smoke escaping from inside the unit. As most of you likely know, electronics tend not to work once the magic smoke has gotten out. So, RIP power supply.

Overall Review: On the very bright side, it did not take any other components with it when it died. After installing a new power supply from a different manufacturer everything was fine. I am willing to believe that this failure was a fluke, but at the same time I wasn't willing to risk another of these units failing. 5 Stars for Newegg though. The return for refund was very painless and I wasn't charged for return shipping.

Good RAM

CORSAIR XMS 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR 400 (PC 3200) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TWINX2048-3200
CORSAIR XMS 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR 400 (PC 3200) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TWINX2048-3200

Pros: 2 Gigs of Corsair RAM is always a Pro. I notice a bit of improvement in speed over my original 1 Gig, but, not quite as big of one as I had hoped. Still good overall.

Cons: I wasn't able to get this new 2 gigs to play nice with my old 1 gig of Corsair. My comp wouldn't recognize it properly and the RAMs data trasfer rates got cut fully in half and the latency doubled. I had to run just the new 2 gigs to get it to work properly.

Overall Review: I think the reason I had this problem is because the stock timings on the two sets of ram were different(old vs. new). Just make sure you do your research before buying to make sure everything will work together.

Comments: First off, I am happy for those of you who are pleased with this product, but I am not. Very far from it in fact. At first it all seemed well and good, but I have been constantly plauged by SEVERE mouse and KB lag. When not lagging the mouse spends about 1/3 of its time wandering drunkenly around the screen making FPS's all but impossible and normal operations a chore. As for the KB the LCD is a cool idea and I like how it displays song info and such but I find myself incapable of typing without EVERY OTHER WORD lagging or ending up with 4 or more extra letters. Also both randomly disconnect at the most inconvenient times. I have had this less that 24 hours and have already disconected it. Since it renders my fine system nearly useless. I would like to add that I do like Logitech products and I think I'll try the MX3100 combo next. But as for the MX5000, well, if I could get my money back for a bag of very small pieces you can guess what I might do. ;)

Great for the price.

GIGABYTE GH-ED821-LC 94 mm Ball CPU Cooler

Comments: Coupled with some Arctic Silver 5 this thing does a great job for 15 bucks. Idle temp with an AMD 64 4000+ is usually around 34C, 48C full load. Down AT LEAST 6-8C from that piece of junk stock fan and heat sink.

Comments: I previously owned an Asus P4C800E Deluxe. I loved it so I stuck with Asus and bought this board. I plugged everything in and fired up the system, not a single proplem. Everything I hoped for and more. As for MrHardCore below Ive heard that some of the Asus boards have problems posting if more than 1 gig of ram is installed before the bios is updated. Or something like that, worth a shot if you havnt tried it yet. Hope it helps. Asus A8N-SLI Premium AMD 64 4000+ Clawhammer 1GB Corsair XMS EVGA GeForce 7800 GT OC 2x 80GB Seagate Cuda's (Raid 0)
