Very slow wireless connection

NETGEAR N300 Open-Source Gigabit WiFi Router 128MB NAND and 128MB RAM, 480 MHz MIPS 74K Processor (WNR3500Lv2)
NETGEAR N300 Open-Source Gigabit WiFi Router 128MB NAND and 128MB RAM, 480 MHz MIPS 74K Processor (WNR3500Lv2)

Pros: Easy setup. Relatively cheap for the speeds it suppose to support.

Cons: With the exception of one of my laptop, the wifi speed is horrible for portable devices. iPhones (4s and 5s), ps4, ps3, ps vita, and a desktop with a PCI network card, all get slow speeds; I get < 2mb/s for these devices where I get >25 mb/s on my laptop. This is with the router on top of a table, in the middle of the room, and being 3 feet from the devices. The last month of owning this has been terrible. I have tried everything I can think of to get it to perform better. I updated to the latest netgear firmware. Changed a few settings on the router and my devices and have gotten my speed up to almost 4 mb/s. I considered installing a 3rd party firmware but various tests on the internet show very few performance improvement in this model. Even though I have had decent luck with netgear router's in the past, I don't think it is a path that I will journey down again. My t-mobile data plan should not be 9x the speed of a wireless router connected to decent internet.
