Great Device

EDIMAX EW-7318USG Wireless LAN Hi-Gain Adapter IEEE 802.11b/g USB 2.0 Up to 54Mbps Wireless Data Rates
EDIMAX EW-7318USG Wireless LAN Hi-Gain Adapter IEEE 802.11b/g USB 2.0 Up to 54Mbps Wireless Data Rates

Pros: Hardware works well. Good, strong signal. software installs easily and works flawlessly. Removable antenna with standard connector (can replace the supplied antenna with a better one). Uses little memory.

Cons: Few software options, for instance, cannot choose where the software will be installed (directory) and can't eliminate the tray icon.

Overall Review: Nice to have it on a USB interface (rather than PCI), so I can use a long USB cable to put the antenna at a distance for better reception without suffering the losses that would occur with long antenna cables. Use the drivers on Edimax's website rather then the older ones that come on the CD.

Works well but has design flaws

Logitech - Bluetooth Audio Receiver
Logitech - Bluetooth Audio Receiver

Pros: It works great once it is installed and set up (see cons)

Cons: I encountered three design flaws: - The power cord must be forced into its jack very hard in order for the unit to receive power. Make sure the blue LED lights up as an indication of receiving power (not mentioned in the sparse instructions). - The 3.5mm jack for the audio signal doesn't ground well, so there is a 60-Hertz hum. I fixed this by buying an audio cable with RCA plugs on both ends, thus avoiding the defective 3.5mm jack. - Logitech provides an adhesive surface to mount the device, but it is far to weak to do the job. I tried to stick it to the wooden back of the cabinet where I have my stereo equipment, but it fell off -- and that was before I attached the cables that add extra weight.

Overall Review: A fine product for those who like to troubleshoot and improvise.

Non-uniform screen

NEC Display Solutions EA192M-BK Black 19" 5ms Height,Swivel & Pivot Adjustable LED BackLight LCD Monitor w/ Display Port & Speakers 250 cd/m2 DC 25,000:1 (1,000:1)
NEC Display Solutions EA192M-BK Black 19" 5ms Height,Swivel & Pivot Adjustable LED BackLight LCD Monitor w/ Display Port & Speakers 250 cd/m2 DC 25,000:1 (1,000:1)

Pros: Environmentally friendly. Stand works very nicely, including pivot (many monitors don't have a pivot mode). Controls are easy to use, especially with the NaViSet software.

Cons: Screen brightness isn't uniform, and brightness and color vary greatly depending on viewing angle (even at +/- 20 degrees). I contacted NEC tech support about this and was told that this was normal for this TN panel technology. To get better uniformity, I would have to get a more expensive monitor with PVA panel technology. However, this monitor isn't as good as a Samsung and a Dell that I have with TN panel technology. Although software (a driver and the NaViSet package) are available for this monitor, they aren't on a CD that ships with it; you have to know about them and download them from the NEC website, and there are no instructions for installing the driver.

Overall Review: I returned the monitor. It wasn't acceptable for the photography work I do.

Thermal resistance?

ZALMAN CNPS 8700 NT 110mm 2 Ball CPU Cooler
ZALMAN CNPS 8700 NT 110mm 2 Ball CPU Cooler

Pros: Appears to be a powerful yet relatively quiet cooler for those whose cases have limited headroom above the motherboard.

Cons: Zalman will not reveal the thermal resistance of this unit, despite three e-mails to them requesting it. In case you aren't aware, thermal resistance is the primary performance parameter of a cooler and tells us how much CPU temperature will rise for each watt of power that goes into the CPU. It is much more helpful than other specifications, such as the fin area or the materials used. Apparently, the thermal resistance of this model isn't very good compared to Zalman's other coolers or to competitive units, so Zalman does not want us to know this. They do provide the thermal resistance of many of their other coolers.

Overall Review: I wish Zalman were more open about the true effectiveness of their coolers rather than just hyping the blue LEDs and other fluff.

Hardware A; Software D

GIGABYTE GA-EP45C-DS3R LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard
GIGABYTE GA-EP45C-DS3R LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Hardware is well thought out and works perfectly.

Cons: See my report below dated 10/31/2008. After 14 e-mails to/from Gigabyte, the audio drivers still aren't working properly. I finally discovered that they are incompatible with Windows XP SP3, which, unfortunately, is the latest service pack for XP. Gigabyte's final advice: "We do not write the drivers for UAA for SP3, we had heard from users some were able to get it to work with SP3 with registry editing. We are unable to provide the information since it may cause damage to the registry and can ruin the OS. You will need to search and perform on your own regarding this if you wish to use SP3."

Overall Review: Gigabyte's tech support is very responsive, just not very helpful. I reported before that I replaced Gigabyte's poor motherboard monitoring software with SpeedFan. I have since found that Hardware Sensors Monitor is even better than SpeedFan.

Works great but save your money

CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TWIN2X2048-6400
CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TWIN2X2048-6400

Pros: Runs flawlessly at the rated speed and timings

Cons: Dual channel only gives a slight performance improvement over single channel. For example, I ran the Performance Test Memory Mark benchmark with both sticks installed (dual channel mode) and with only one stick installed (single channel). The improvement in Memory Mark was only 3.2%. Wikipedia and other sources on the Web say that the improvement is generally less than 5%. So you'd be better off spending your money on more memory or higher speed memory than on dual channel.

Overall Review: I haven't tried to overclock this memory.

Customer service nightmare

Above question, "Was the item as Seller Described," doesn't apply, because I didn't receive the item. All I received from Antonline was a sheet of cardboard with a mailing label on it (no box,, no envelope). After three weeks of investigation, including four sets of photos I sent of the cardboard, they denied my claim and said the shipment was normal. I will have to reorder the item at my own expense.
