Great Little Server!

HP ProLiant N40L MicroServer Server System AMD Turion II Neo N40L 1.5GHz 2-Core 2GB (1 x 2GB) DDR3 1 x 250GB LFF SATA 658553-001
HP ProLiant N40L MicroServer Server System AMD Turion II Neo N40L 1.5GHz 2-Core 2GB (1 x 2GB) DDR3 1 x 250GB LFF SATA 658553-001

Pros: - Quiet, small, easy to add drives, 2 slots for add-on cards, affordable, low power (27 watts idle, 3 disks), gigabit LAN, 64-bit CPU. - Very fast copies to and from via LAN, topping at about 120+ MB for large ISO or MKV files. Folders with smaller files go slower, depends on their content. - Compatible with ESXi 5, MS Server 2008 R2, Ubuntu Server 11.10 x64 - Plenty of USB ports - Third party BIOS available to unlock IDE ports as SATA - Some mods are possible but not needed; works great out of the box with some more RAM.

Cons: I know this is an entry-level server system, but cons are cons: - hard drives are non hot-plug. Not a huge deal, but the ability to hot-plug a drive for backups would be nice. Have to use USB drives for offsites backups to avoid shutting down the server. - initial 2GB RAM is limiting, and you will likely need to upgrade. Max it out and future proof yourself. - Not much "server management" software from HP. Drivers are available on their site though. - Unplugging the SATA controller from the board is a pain! This is necessary when upgrading the RAM. Don't just "pull" it out, use a small screw driver to "push-in" the pin on the connector. - 2 cores and 1.5 GHz can be a limiting factor for heavier loads and multitasking. - Only Raid 0/1, no raid 5 - No pass-through disks for ESXi, raid volume recognized as individual disks. - Some Linux distros (Fedora 15 & 16, Mint 11 & 12) failed to install or load. I know it's Red Hat compatible, but didn't try anything else. - USB kb/mouse

Overall Review: I wrote a lot of cons, but they may not really affect everyone. I was specific on my needs. I purchased this server for home use. It's currently working as a file server, but I plan to install Subsonic and PS3 Media Server in the near future. It is running Windows Server 2008 R2, and works with Core version too. Ubuntu Server 11.10 works as well. WHS 2011 should work, didn't try it. Virtualization works great under Hyper-V; ESXi 5 was too slow installing the OS from a local datastore. Installed a HP P212 raid card adapter for raid 5. Not very difficult to install; some cable routing needed. Installed BIOS mod; moved the 250 GB to the ODD slot for OS, have 3 HD204UIs on raid 5 on the P212 controller; read speeds top at about 345MB+; write about 223MB+ under ATTO standard test. Plan to add 4th data disk soon. Great overall small server. Recommended for those who want a file server & prefer "hands on" and flexibility. Purchased this over a dedicated NAS for speed, price, and flexibil

Nice and Large LED Monitor

ASUS VS Series VS247H-P 24" (Actual size 23.6") Full HD 1920 x 1080 60Hz HDMI VGA DVI-D SPLENDID Modes Widescreen LED Backlight LCD Monitor
ASUS VS Series VS247H-P 24" (Actual size 23.6") Full HD 1920 x 1080 60Hz HDMI VGA DVI-D SPLENDID Modes Widescreen LED Backlight LCD Monitor

Pros: Large viewing area LED backlight HDMI Thin bezzel, light weight Bright Lots of options to adjust No dead pixels!

Cons: Stand is a bit wobbly. To adjust the monitor settings, it's necessary to hold the monitor down by the base or it will just wobble too much, making it difficult to do the adjustments. Also, the monitor is not as sharp as I expected it. The pixels are clearly visible from normal viewing distance, and the text is not as sharp as the Acer 20" LED that I've been using as my main at the office, or the older 22" Acer LCD that I have at home. I've used the Windows 8 calibration tool to adjust the colors and font, but I'm still not pleased. Perhaps some more adjustments may be necessary, but so far I'm not "wowed" with its sharpness. I'm using a DVI cable and the computer's built-in GPU, since I don't need any more than that in an office setting. I also find the whites a bit warmer than they are on my other Acer 20" LED - not sure what this could be, but the whites are noticeably different - "warmer" is the word. I've adjusted the settings, but not even in "cool" does it look as white and as nice as the other one.

Overall Review: I can't complaint much since I asked for a large monitor and my manager bought it for me, and also that it's much larger than the previous 20" LED that I've been using. Having a larger monitor will tremendously help me get more work done in a more effective way, since I can set two windows side by side and still have plenty of room to spare. I really hope that I can find a way to somehow sharpen those pixels a little bit, by either using a different DVI or HDMI cable or upgrading the onboard video card. Regardless of these observations, I think it's a great monitor for general office work.

Great Case

SUPERMICRO CSE-731i-300B Black Mini-Tower Server Case
SUPERMICRO CSE-731i-300B Black Mini-Tower Server Case

Pros: Looks professional and clean Has network and HDD leds on front panel, two usb connectors Power supply is decent for small builds, including Xeon 1230 v2 and 2 WD RE HDDs. Somewhat quiet

Cons: Only 4 internal HDD bays PSU has low wattage, but enough for small builds A bit pricey

Overall Review: Great case. Built two servers with same components and it's working great so far. Recommended.

Great Drive, Rebate Not So

OCZ Agility 3 2.5" 60GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) AGT3-25SAT3-60G
OCZ Agility 3 2.5" 60GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) AGT3-25SAT3-60G

Pros: Great drive, fast read/writes, compatible with Windows 7 x64, Windows 8 Consumer Preview and Windows 8 Release Preview; haven't tried installing any other operating systems on it. Works great as the system drive and to install a few "light" programs.

Cons: The ONLY con I've got with this is that I never got my rebate. According to the rebate center, my rebate was received, accepted, processed, and even issued a rebate check, but I just never received the check. When contacting them about the check that they issued but I never received, I was told that they'd send out another one soon. I'm still waiting on it. SO, don't buy this drive on sale hoping to get the rebate. Chances are you won't. I did everything as asked, my rebate was accepted, processed, and even issued a check number, but I guess somebody forgot to drop them at the post office.

Overall Review: Works great, fast, stable. My only issue with it is the rebate... not getting my check.

Great Drive, Great Price

SAMSUNG EcoGreen F4 ST2000DL004 2TB 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive
SAMSUNG EcoGreen F4 ST2000DL004 2TB 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Reliable, decent price per gigabyte now that prices have gone down a bit, fairly quiet and fast

Cons: I had 3 HD204UIs before buying this one, and they all "clicked" every time the computer powered on. I even exchanged one thinking that it was going to die, but even the replacement "clicked", so I learned to live with it. Other than the click when first powering on, they're fairly quiet.

Overall Review: I have 4 of these on RAID 5 on my MicroServer, using a HP P212 smart controller card. Read/write speeds are pretty decent, over 250+ MB/s, sometimes 300+ MB/s, depending on how full the array is. Been using 3 for over a year now, all in RAID 5, and just added this 4th one now. Although now manufactured by Seagate, they still have the same model number as the older HD204UIs, just slightly different. These make great drives for backup purposes or small file servers. I'm keeping these for a while. Recommended.

Works Great on HP MicroServer

Kingston 8GB (2 x 4GB) ECC Unbuffered DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Server Memory Model KVR1333D3E9SK2/8G
Kingston 8GB (2 x 4GB) ECC Unbuffered DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Server Memory Model KVR1333D3E9SK2/8G

Pros: Purchased this kit to install on HP MicroServer N40L, replacing the original 2GB chip. Works great, no errors, lockups, or issues at all. Fits perfectly fine.

Cons: ECC RAM is priced a bit higher than non-ECC, but I knew this.

Overall Review: Although the HP MicroServer accepts non-ECC RAM, I chose to buy this for the peace of mind and stability. Why skimp on RAM, when it's such an essential part of a system? I was skeptical about Kingston for server RAM, but this one did not let me down. Works great, is stable (so far), and the system recognized it immediately; no BIOS adjustments needed. I didn't run a memory test, but it's always a good idea when buying RAM. Recommended buy.
