Good Overall Scanner
Pros: Way better than the HP 5590 I replaced. Software is easy to use. ADF is less complex and is less prone to jamming than the ADF on my older HP. The top cover is lighter than my older HP--since the ADF is lighter--and this makes single page scans using the document table much easier.
Cons: The ADF is a bit of a disappoinment as pages tend to scan crooked. My old HP was the same way. I found if I use the "Office Mode" of the software and scan B&W pages using the "grayscale" setting, pages go through the ADF slower, and will scan straighter. I also find myself putting slight finger pressure on the paper guide to help guide pages go through the ADF straighter. Bottom line: if you need perfect scans, do each page one at a time from the document table.
Overall Review: Overall, it is a good quality scanner for the price. Of course, New Egg delivered my scanner quickly and efficiently. I also got it on sale, which was a plus!
Not What is Depicted in Photos
Pros: A very good product; works better than two others I have purchased.
Cons: The photo shows that "10x" means you get 10 pairs of temple-keepers. In actuality, you get half that amount. "10x" really means "10-pieces", or 5-pairs. The photo is misleading!
Overall Review: Change the photo!
Disappointed
Pros: None
Cons: This camera is definitely not plug and play. I installed and uninstalled the software three times, both from the CD and from files downloaded from the Hercules website to no avail. The camera has a mind of its own. Sometimes it works for a few minutes, showing a very grainy picture, but most of the time it just does not work. Either the software states the camera is not present or Windows will not recognize the camera, and you don't know if either will happen each time you restart your computer. Hercules' support is not that good. The company is based in France. They have a support line with limited hours. The website has a portal where you can write the problems you are having and get an email response, but I have yet to hear from them.
Overall Review: My daughter opened the box and threw it away before I installed the device, so no sending it back. Most of the items I buy from New Egg are really good.
Pros: This scanner has few pros...... The scans are good quality, but this scanner is a pain to use. I have been using one owned by my employer from a home office setting for the past three years. I am changing employers, and will recommend this piece of equipment just go to salvage. It is not worth the postage to send it back to my company's headquarters. I am already shopping for its replacement.
Cons: The automatic document feeder (ADF) o this scanner is total junk. The particular scanner I have was used in an office setting for two-years before I took it to my home office, and the original ADF was replaced under warranty. But, the design is so flawed that the replacement ADF quickly malfunctioned again. When the scanner does function correctly in the automatic mode, every page will be scanned with about an 8-degree tilt to the left. You cannot feed documents with creases or folds, as the ADF jams too easily. Once jammed, the jammed pages are difficult to remove. If you are not careful, the ADF will pull multiple pages through at a time, causing you to have to interrupt scans and conduct re-runs. The cover to the scanner is top-heavy due to the duplex-feeder, and it is unwieldy to use scanning single pages at a time. The paper tray to the ADF is not securely attached, frequently pops loose, and must be aligned just right to get it to stay in its proper place.
Overall Review: I ran out of room discussing the cons for the HP 5590. The software works, but is unwieldy, and prone to developing errors. Like on my computer, trying to install an update that fails to install, every time I open the program up. So, I am reviewing scanners right now. I have my eye on one offered on sale by NewEgg. As you all know, New Egg rocks, and I know I will once again be a satisfied customer. One of the great things about NewEgg are the customer reviews. It is very important that you read any and all reviews before you purchase an item of equipment. That is why I took the time to write a review on the HP 5590--to help my fellow customers make an informed decision before buying this scanner.
Very Quiet
Pros: I have had a CPU overheating problem and decided to add two 80mm case fans to my system. I bought two; a side fan for an intake and a rear fan for an exhaust. Fans were very easy to install and hook up. They are very quiet. An additional Pro is that because I bought two fans, New Egg gave me a $1.00 discount on each item. The discount covered 2/3 of the shipping costs. The whole upgrade, including shipping was just under $14.00 (tech labor from my daughter was free....).
Cons: I had expected my system to cool down a bit more than it has. My CPU core temp is running a steady 6C less than from before, so these fans do help a lot.
Overall Review: I have an AMD 64 X2 processor, the 6400+. I may still look for even better cooling, and might upgrade the cooling fan and heat sink. I bought this computer as a pre-assembled, and pretested barebones kit from an online vendor (portatech.com). I should have opted for the upgraded cooling package when I bought this system. I use SpeedFan to monitor the temps, and my CPU core is right now sitting at 53C. The max for this CPU is 63C, which I routinely exceeded before I installed NewEgg's fans.
Pros: Relatively easy to use.
Cons: Duplex scanning is terrible. Document feeder jams with regularity. Must use this as a flat-panel scanner, one page at a time now. The weight of the top cover makes the use of it this way a little more unwieldy than if it was a regular flat-panel scanner.
Overall Review: I don't recommend this scanner if you need something more than a flat-panel scanner. have not yet tried the negative scanner. the unit takes up quite a bit of space on top of my desk, and I have often thought of just ditching it and making my HP 1310 color all-in-one my main scanner. This little thing works good enough for me and has never given me a problem.
