Exactly how modular is this PSU? from the pictures, it looks like there are quite a few cables that cannot be removed

The motherboard power, molex, and satas are all seperate. I had some trouble with the satas because my case is tall and my parts are spread out, but it still works with a little slack.  The molex was fine though with extra slots and slack in it.

I'm not sure if any are removable but all the cables are together and it ends up being neat and easy to manage.  As you can see they just clip to the side of the psu to easily "store" them away.

Is this compatible with a Dell Inspiron 560?

Yes, the Inspiron 560 is a standard ATC form factor, so any ATX power supply will be compatible.

I took it right out of the box, plugged it in, flipped the switch, and nothing happened.  Expected?

Has it been installed and connected to the computer ?  I've never plugged in a PS, right out of the box,  You can lay it to the side, and make the necessary connection  , mother board, cpu, fans and test it.

Negative. Blue LED only. The LED can be turned on/off independently.

My son is wanting to run the Sapphire Nitro R7 370 with an I5 2400 (to be upgraded later) with this PS.  Will the PCI/e provide enough watts for the card, which is rated at 75W?

Thank you for the responses.  I think we're okay power wise.  He'll only have the CPU, 2 sticks memory and a SSD, besides the card.  I am trying to figure this part out:  the side of the case lists 514 watts for one set of cables, and 16watts for another set, total 530.

Which set of cables is supposed to only be carrying 16watts?

One cable ends in a red connector, which matches a cable with red connectors marked PCIe.  I'm assuming this is powered from the main rail, since the new video cards pull so much power.

Will this fit in a NZXT Technologies Source 210 Computer Case with a 970A-D3P Motherboard?

This is a standard size PSU. If your power supply is about 6" x 3" x"3", it should fit. I used it in an HP minitower.

I'm wondering if this thing is able to run a Intel i5 4760k with a mild overclock and a r9 270x with default overclock?

It will, not well though, go for 600 watt corsair or thermaltake or one of the other big guys, i recommend this for milder builds

In a Laptop obviously not but for the Desktop line, in most cases it will fit just fine.  As I don't know what model you have one can't be 100% sure but the odds are it will fit.

Will this work with BIOSTAR Hi-Fi A85S3 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard?

In the future just look for the main power connector type (24-pin) and match to your Mobo (most will do fine).
