Can drives attached to this card be the boot drive?

Not in my old HP Z400. No SATA drives were scanned on the new controller and none showed up in the BIOS Boot Order config. The F9 Boot menu also had no drives attached to this controller. In addition, a SATA SSD on the motherboard built in SATA controller was not available for booting either! I had to switch my built in SATA to IDE emulation mode before I could boot my primary SSD, Once my Linux OS booted, the kernel had no issues detecting the new controller and all 7 SATA disks/ssd's. I am also using mdadm and software RAID 10 with no issues (4 disks). SMART and disks temps both work via the controller and default linux drivers.

Could this be used in a Mac Pro 5.1?

The product information does not specify Mac OS support. It mentions compatibility with Windows 10, 8, Server 2008R2, NAS Synology, Ubuntu, and Linux OS.

Can this be used for SAS drives? I have a SAS hard drive and have a sas to sata passive converter. I hooked up the sata to my Asus motherboard and the drive is not detected. So I need a SAS controller but I have it ocnverted into a sata cable. So would this be able to control the SAS hard drive?

A SAS to SATA cable combines 4 SATA lanes for 4 SATA drives and a SAS port. A SAS drive uses all 4 lanes for the single drive providing a faster interface (like an M2). A SAS to SATA cable is often used when the port is SAS compliant but you want to use multiple SATA drives instead. I have never heard of anyone trying to use it backwards.
