Can the shift key be remapped and used as a sniper button for fps games?

Accepted Answer

It absolutely can! There are an enormous number of functions that can be assigned to nearly every button on the mouse - the only exceptions are the ability to bind Roccat's "easy shift function", which can only (so far as I can tell from checking the software as I write this) be assigned to the three left side buttons of the mouse. Additionally, all other functions, including macros, either main mouse buttons, and any keyboard key can be assigned to any button other than the left and right main mouse buttons, which are dedicated to their respective functions. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask them here and I will respond ASAP!

Question 2

Can the mouse DPI be easily switched on the fly?  So if I am sniping and need the mouse less sensitive (1000dpi) and then I need to twitch (3500 dpi) can I?

Accepted Answer

Yes you sure can.  I will warn you though, if you ever need support for this mouse do not expect to receive much help from ROCCAT.  I have issues with this software and was basically told that because I am the only person with the issue they cannot help.  It took me sending like 20 emails to every email I could find for thier company to get that response, and I am emailed their CEO, René Korte, which is why I think I FINALLY got an answer. I had written you in December already that the issue is not reproducible on multiple Windows 8.1 machines and that yours is the only case we had since the release of the Tyon with this issue. Since the software can be installed without the Tyon connected and in regards of the fact that it works with another PC of yours we can rule out a hardware fault of the Tyon itself. So the issue must be caused by your PC. It could be that you are using an old version of the Windows Installer, that a software or driver you are using on the PC is blocking the installation or that you don’t have the appropriate rights to install the driver on your PC. If this was an error of the Tyon driver or the installer we would have multiple requests about this issue. I am very sorry but there is nothing left I could do for you in this case.

Question 3

I'm accustomed to a very light mouse (Razer Deathadder).  Can anyone say how much heavier this mouse is by comparison?

This isn't a particularly heavy or light mouse, about average, but it is made for a larger hand and is contoured to fit it well. It's very responsive and highly customizable, each button individually, as well as the color of the mouse wheel and the trim around the base (which can be different colors, as well as varied blinking patterns) and the buttons are all in convenient places. I use them far more often than I used most of the buttons on my old Razer Naga, not to mention that it's far easier to make sure you're using the right one than with a dozen close together. I haven't used a Death Adder since an earlier version years ago, so I can't accurately compare the weight or features to that, but as a long time fan and user of Razer products, as much as I love their products, I was very pleasantly pleased with this mouse and highly recommend it.

Question 4

What type of color patterns/options are available?  Just one solid color each for the wheel and the base?  Or anything more sophisticated (like the Razer Chroma products, for example)?

Hi Bruce,

The number of color customization options is staggering. The software that governs the customization is easy to use and breaks your options down into several categories:

The colors themselves: You can choose any pre-made color, or make your own.

LED Patterns: I believe the system comes with many patterns. You can set the LEDS on both the mouse wheel or base to pulse, blink, breath, heart beat, flow or just on if you want to. You may also have the two LED sections follow two different patterns: for example, you can have your mouse wheel "breath" through all of the reds on the color wheel, while your mouse base "blink" through all of the blues. There are many, many different options.

Profiles: You can set up numerous profiles with different mouse key binds and color schemes. For example, you could have gold/blue for Counter Strike, Red/Blue for TF2, or any other combination you can think of. The nifty thing about this feature is that you can set your mouse to switch to the profile for a specific game automatically. Very, very cool.

Question 5

Should I get this or the Roccat Nyth? I mostly play RPGs and shooters, but also other genres too. My grip style is palm grip.

I have both the Tyon and the Nyth and can honestly say that I have never used better mice than these two in over 30 years of computing. I tend to mainly play RPGs and MMOs with some shooters, to give you an idea of what I use them for.

The difference between these two really comes down to customization. The software that runs these mice is the same and allows you to assign whatever values you like to each button individually. You can see where all the buttons are on the Tyon but the Nyth comes with a box of buttons that you can swap in for your thumb. If these don't work and you have access to a 3D printer, you can print out weird shaped buttons, too.

Really, the only thing about the Tyon I had difficulty getting used to is the placement of the Shift button. Don't get me wrong; it's a great spot, but it's more intuitive to have that area for frequently used functions. On the Nyth the Shift is right above the wheel and is really easy to use there. Like you, I use the palm style, but I also have large hands so since the Tyon is closer in size to other mice, it tends to be a little small for me, forcing me into more like a claw. The Nyth has a hot swappable extension that gives me a mouse that actually fits my hand for the first time in my life and I'm thrilled with that.

When they were creating the Nyth, they had a contest asking for people to submit where they liked button placement and I wrote in that I loved the options they gave now but would like them to add one or two buttons on the right side to be used with the pinky and/or ring finger. While it isn't possible with either the Nyth or the Tyon, they have reconfigured the Kova to have two buttons on the right. Unfortunately, it only has two buttons on the left, too. It's due to be released on 11/17 if that configuration is preferable for you, but I'm going to stick with the Nyth and Tyon as a secondary.

Question 6

Can i fit my 3rd and pinky finger on the mouse? can you?
any one use this and the Nyth that could give a first hand comparison?

I have large hands and yes all the fingers fit just fine. I use the tyon while my wife uses the nyth. They have completely different feels and are not interchangeable at all in my opinion. the nyth is a nice mouse that I personally would only use for mmo rpg's as the mouse just feels slower IMO. the way it glides on mouse pads just feels slower to me. the nyth comes with 2 options you can swap out for hand comfort so as far as that goes it can be more comfy just from usage standpoint. Tyon is the better all around mouse IMO and as long as they keep making it I will keep buying them when I wear mine out.

Question 7

Is this mouse plug-&-play or are drivers absolutely needed? Also is it compatible with Mac OS?

Accepted Answer

The mouse is plug-and-play but to change button config and sensitivity you need the driver. There is a set of default configurations if you can't install the driver utility.

The mouse itself should be compatible with OSX, but I don't think they have the utility for it. Fortunately, configurations can be saved on the mouse's onboard memory.

You could probably even configure it from a virtualbox running Windows if you really need to change something. After you have it just how you like it, you'll never need to look at the utility again.
