Can I use this instead of my comcast box?

Probably not.  Your Comcast box includes a tuner to view Cable channels.  A Roku will run apps like Netflix and Pluto, but cannot provide access to local TV channels.

If you are cutting the cord, Roku will give you access to vast amounts of content.  If you are in a metro area, a plane old (Rabbit ears) antenna will get you your local Over The Air (OTA) channels.

Although I bought this unit in 2019 I do not know when it was manufactured. It is OK but I will warn you that all the free stuff is OLD movies and programs.  They do have access to a lot of fee based programs and movies for sale. The unit I have had a USB port so I can access films and TV programs I have stored on an external hard drive. My old western Digital theater unit allowed me to connect up to 5 hard drives but this Roku unit ONLY allows one hard drive unit. 
The Hugh difference is the Western Digital now sells for around 450. - 500.
Roku does play in higher 4k def. and I don't remember if the WD did or not.
All in all - not a bad product for the price.
