Pros: Did you know Rosewill is Newegg’s house brand? In the past (years ago) I was more judgmental of the name. I can say I have used many Rosewill labeled products with complete satisfaction, but being truthful, it wasn’t always rainbows and unicorns. This power supply is probably the first Rosewill branded one I have used in a long time, and in short, it has turned my eyes back to the affordable great performance backed by a company that I truly do believe cares about its consumers. The next part to this preface is where we see the dedication and turn around both from Newegg and Rosewill. If you didn’t know this, I hope this educates you and places newfound confidence in the product you are looking at (I feel for the other reviewers, but I also believe it was simply unfortunate luck that lead to their reviews reflecting sub-par and poorly). Rosewill’s G1200 Capstone is none other than an Enhance PSU. Enhance is an OEM manufacturer that designs, collaborates, and works with companies to produce some of the best power supplies across some of the top brands (Antec, Cooler Master, Zalman, and most notably Silverstone). Enhance is also known for making leap-forward improvements (they listen to feedback and actively aim to produce better power supplies). This reviewer personally rates Enhance as one of the top PSU manufacturers when you need something that will keep trucking. Seasonic (Some Corsair/NZXT Hale models) is my all-time favorite OEM PSU manufacturer, followed by FSP (some BeQuiet!/Hale models) but these are often unfriendly choices to our bank accounts. If you have ever wondered about what PSU you’re actually using you can check the UL number on the label, but most OEM manufacturers proudly put their names on internal components visible through the grille. The Rosewill Capstone G1200 is a beast of a power supply beyond the needs of most of us. It has a design for some seemingly specific styled applications I’ll cover in this review, but can be applied to accommodate everyday use with ease. It isn’t the prettiest PSU to showcase, and while it’s semi modular, a lot is left to be desired when you notice the ugly ketchup/mustardy look of the horrendous, and in most cases visible, 24 pin connector. The rear vent is covered, but inside are bright ugly components like capacitors. I have seen a neat tactic in some PSUs where it’s shrouded inside with a tinted plastic to make it less of an eye sore. On that topic however, it’s not like people will be gazing fondly at the rear of the PSU. And it’s not that the PSU visual aesthetics are the most important things in the world, but the whole enclosure seems to be a little dated feeling, everything from wording on the back, to design choice, to style implementation of the 24 pin cable. It’s likely intentional that it doesn’t attempt market appeal beyond what it is. The power supply is rated 80+ Gold by the EPRI standards, and in theory under different loads should always operate above 80% efficiency or better. The modular input panel provides a large amount of diversity, but notably supports power for dual CPUs (color coded), either same board server board, or a neat twin board set up idea in theory. I felt this PSU would be best suited in a moderately demanding home server style application (I know right? Unless you run a twin socket power hog home business, it likely won’t see that sort of use). All aspects of its design make this reviewer feel this way about the Capstone G1200. Of course this does not limit it to only be used this way. For the price, with the gold rating, it’s hard to pass up considering it for enthusiast builds. Rosewill is a brand that used to fall in the middle for me, and while it will take time to fully test dependability and reliability of this power supply, for now it seems to be a pretty great choice. Some Alchemy extensions should take care of the ugly 24 pin, and the non-needed cables will not be used saving some cable space. It’s sort of like Corsair’s CX###. Deal with a little bit of ugly for a good price, and find a solution for the bad.
Cons: As I have sort of touched on above, some of the cons are (for now at least) the dated style, and the ugly 24 pin connector. Over all I have had no major issues with the PSU, it isn’t as quiet as I thought it should have been with a 135MM fan against such restricting grille. It operates and functions fully as I anticipated, but I am wary of other reports involving the Capstone series having failure. If I encounter any issues I will amend my review to properly reflect any issues, as well as the customer service experience. The lack of support, short of alchemy extensions, for customization is a bummer. While it is a bummer, it should be considered this is an exceptionally priced, work horse PSU, by a brand (Rosewill) owned by a company that excels in customer satisfaction (Newegg).
Overall Review: For now, I would recommend it as an alternative idea to the far more pricey. To me it is a bargain find given the OEM is Enhance, and the price is fairly awesome for all that it has to offer. Most enthusiasts will set their sights on a higher, more popular, flashier and more expensive option, but at the end of the day this semi-ugly duckling would be my pick. I hope not to encounter issues, as of course anyone hopes not to encounter issues, but if issues arise I will update about it. Until then my review stands firm. This is a lot of power supply, from a reputable OEM, sold by a subsidiary of a company I whole heartedly trust and has never failed to resolve my issues. I will continue to try Rosewill products in the future on my own dime, I want to love Rosewill but they truly have been hit or miss for me in yesteryears. I’m hoping the Capstone G1200 will continue to be what I feel it is now. I have my eyes open for the issues the other two previous reviewers have mentioned. As I stated I will update if I encounter an issue.
