It accommodates one drive at a time; either 2.5 or 3.5 inches. You cannot have two drives in the dock simultaneously. This is a common design for these style docks.

Is there a clear answer on how large a drive this can support?  4 TB?  6 TB?  Larger?  Please report the largest drive you've used at 4 TB or more.  Thanks!

yes. The 2.5" hard drive is a laptop drive. It works with only SATA drive;' it won't work for older IDE drives.

i have a HDD drive from my last computer it has my OS on it. My question is will it need to be reformatted for me to pull files off it? I have lots of pics and movies i would like to recover from it. Does any one know for a fact?

You should be able to. When you insert the HDD in the docking station, it basically becomes like an "extra large" flash drive. The only possible issue might be if the OS on your HDD is Windows and you're connecting it to a Mac, or vice versa. Although, I don't think that should matter because my wife has a Mac and I use flash drives formatted with NTFS to be able to copy files to and from her Mac. You should definitely not have to format the HDD. If you get a prompt to do so, DON'T! Try connecting it to a different computer, preferably with the same OS.

I have a series of old computers that have been replaced over the years. I am looking for a product that I can use to read their hard drives so I can remove the drives and throw away the rest of the computers. From one of the other answers, it sounds like this will not wok on older drives. How can I tell the difference between the newer and older drives?  Is there a product that works on the older drives?

Hello M K there are primarily two types of drive's,   IDE and SATA, the latter is the connection used by the docking station you were looking at.  You can tell the difference by the cable used to connect them to the computer.  The older connection IDE has a flat 1.5 inch wide cable, SATA the newer connection is also flat but no more than a 1/4 of an inch wide maybe a little bit more. I have purchased IDE to USB adapters from NEWEGG before. You should be able to do the same, keep in mind  just because you have an old computer doesn't mean you have old connections double check them before you purchase and good luck.

This unit will not support the larger drives. The Rosewill RX30-PU3-35B will support 6TB in the 3.5" slot. See their website for more info

Does this include a USB 3 cable?  Specifications don't say.

It does, you can see it in the picture of everything in the box.  It's a pretty short cable though.  I'd say 1.5 feet.

As this unit appears to have a larger capacitance for recognition I can only assert that it is more like an extension from the PC, A true docking station for multi purposes, I have used acronis and dubbed several Hard Drives, and mostly SSD's, formatting, and preparing drives for installations, etc. It is truly useful! and saves the time of opening up a PC, shutting down, and restarting, to detect drives, and so on. I have used and tested one WD 3tb drive and it responded favorably with a simple rescan of the disks in windows Disk Management. Hope this helps ;)

How do you hot swap? I have this device, but it did not come with any instructions, nor are there any instruction on the Rosewill website. I was able to get Windows to recognize my 2.5" drive (I had to go into Disk Management to assign the drive a letter), but it's recognized as a regular drive and not as a removable device so there's no Eject option in the context menu. How do I dismount the drive so I can safely unplug it without shutting down Windows every time?

You won't be able to eject the inserted drive, but you should be able to eject the dock itself from the "Safely Remove Hardware" menu. Once you eject that, I would power the dock off, give the drive a second or two to fully spin down if it's mechanical, and then remove it.
