How likely is it to have the old type IDE HD's in late model Desktop PC's?

Not very likely at all. Very few manufacturers are using motherboards with any IDE ports at all. Due to the price drops, speed improvements and compatibility with newer machines - SATA is the most common interface.

You would need to purchase an IDE to SATA adapter to be able to use an older hard drive on a new PC.

Yes, that's correct.  Btw, I'm looking at the unit now and the label says:  Output 12V --- 2.0A

I would think it would. The drive size is ok and it is a stat drive so looks ok too me.
