Is this enclosure for an IDE or SATA drive?

it is for a sata.

sata hdd slides right in,no fiddling around with aligning the contacts up.

i bought mine to transfer entire c: drives to a larger drive.
   if you do this,you may want to partition the new bigger hdd first.
win7 on a 40 gb hdd spread over most of a 1tb hdd,with unmovable files well past halfway.

it is a good sturdy box,use of the stand is optional.
file transfer speed is very good.

Will it take IDE drives?

Do you have to reformat the hardrive in order to use this product?  I'm looking to recover some files off a working hardrive.

No you do not need to reformat. For me I used a hard drive that previously served as my OS (partitioned for OS and media) but was showing signs of failure.

After installing that hard drive into this enclosure (make sure you use an appropriate screwdriver to tightly screw everything in) it worked just fine. Hope that helps.

I don't see Windows 7 in the software compatibilty.  Is it Windows 7 compatible?

Any external hard drive enclosure can be compatible with the newer operating systems. Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.  This is an excellent enclosure and easy to assemble.
Regarding the Apple operating systems, they can read an hard drive formatted with the NTFS system but cannot write to the drive.  If formatted to Fat 32 the Apple operating system can read and write to the drive but you have limitation size with FAT 32.  Hope this helps.

Your Western Digital notebook SATA drive is a 2.5". It will plug in the interface, but will not be physically supported in the 3.5" case.

There are many good external cases for your 2.5". Installation is easy with most of them. Look for ones with good ratings, and you'll end up with a good product/solution.

Question 6

My HD is from a dead PC but I need some of the files....will the files be in tact when this product is used or will the HD need to be completely erased and formatted before use?

Dave R,  I had the same problem with a dead PC, but with two Disk drives.  Was able to access both units (bought two Rosewill) without refomating either.  Everything was the same as it was on the dead PC.  I eventually did reformatted the old bookable 'C' drive after getting what I needed off and backed up.  Still using both as extra storage/backup devices.

Will this work with Windows 10 Pro?

Depends on how you format the hard drive (you probably already know, but just in case - this doesn't have a hard drive in it). I formatted mine with with NTFS and it works fine with Win 10 (Enterprise). So it should be good. Hope that helps!

Will this case handle a sata optical drive? I have a blu-ray optical drive I would like to to make portable.

No, this case is designed only for a computer hard drive. it has no openings for an optical drive, An optical drive case is a neat idea, howeve,r I  have not seen one

are you saying I cant use a drive bigger than 320 gb with this enclosure? I mean a 3.5 drive regardless of internal size is the same size on the outside

The product description says you can use a drive up to 2TB. I believe I have a 500GB hard drive in my enclosure, which I only use on my Wii U. As long as it's a 3.5" drive it should fit.

Question 10

I have a WD2500 SE160 "Serial ATA hard drive that I would like to use as an external drive.  Is this external enclosure what I need?  My husband bought 2 of these hard drives so I will need 2 of these enclosures.  And, do I need any cabling for them?

I've used one of these with no problems for 2 years on my iMac desktop (the drive I used in the enclosure came from a 2009 model of the same computer);
mine came with cables, but you'll want to Google your computer drive specs and check closely to make sure the ribbon cable plug on your drive matches the ribbon cable end for the enclosure and that you have the correct type of power connection available on your computer end as well (USB, Firewire, etc.)
