When you call the NWS toll-free number, automated instructions will walk you through entering the S.A.M.E. county code

Can 4AA batteries be installed and used at the same time with the AC adapter?
Yes, and the machine will automatically recognize the priority of using DC JACK power supply.
(The batteries are important because they provide emergency power for the NOAA weather radio in the event of a power outage.)
How is the S.A.M.E. weather radio powered during a power outage?
During an AC power failure, the radio will automatically switch to the 4 AA battery backup.
NOTE: To prevent data loss, you have to connect the other power source (either AC or batteries) within 30 seconds.
When should I change the batteries to avoid losing my settings?
Visual Warning: The display appears blurred.
Audio Warning: The sound becomes distorted, or the radio cannot receive signals properly.
NOTE: When replacing the batteries, keep the AC power adapter connected.
