I believe this unit is versatile enough to be used for backup and repair.  This unit is really a nice unit for the price. You can use it to clone your existing drive unto a different drive, you can use it as an external drive, and you can use it as a backup drive. I bought it from Newegg and the description was indicating that it could be used for 2.5 and 3.5 size drive. Before you buy it, ask the seller about their return policy.
