Will this unit act as a PC monitor using a VGA port or does this unit only work as a TV with the ability to hook up to a hdmi port?  What I want to do is use this as a monitor on my new PC.  Will I need a special video card or will my PC have to have a hdmi port?

there are 2 hdmi ports and 1 component. there is no vga port.

yes this tv can act as a pc monitor but it should only be done in a commercial sense.

your computer will need a video card with dvi or hdmi out. if it has dvi, you will need an adapter. (it would be the same if you have display port.)

if your pc only offers vga out only you might need a device that can convert to hdmi. it usually requires power.

Warning: I had a lot of trouble with this TV.  It kept stopping dead on me--no picture, no sound.  After much wrangling, Samsung sent the necessary part to a local TV repair service free of charge, but I was also told that this particular model was a piece of crap.  It works fine now, but I wonder for how long.  You've been warned!!

Anyone know if this has a headphone jack? Buying for father in a nursing home who is hard of hearing and needs headphones.

There is a left and right audio input/output connection which I assume would work with headphones, but I do not see anything specifically mentioning headphones in the manual. 
It appears that for good video reception you will need HDMI, HDMI-DVI, Video (AV), Component, or Coaxial (RF). I receive an excellent picture with an HDMI cable connected to Comcast cable.

Is there any input lag for gaming consoles that use composite input/output cables (such as GameCube, Wii, etc.)?

In the product tour info it claims it has: 
1 DVI Audio Input (Mini Jack)
1 Digital Audio Out (Optical)

Reviews claim no audio output capability...who to believe?

I have hooked up external speakers to my 32-inch Samsung. The speakers are PC, but  I also use Turtle Beach wireless headsets.
 Nothing fancy but you do have a phone jack and RCA output jacks. Either one will work. Question is what input  requirements are there for the sound bar.
