Yep.  It works excellently as a main drive, but if at all possible, make sure your motherboard provides a heatsink, if not, get one.  These things get HOT.

The 4tb version is single sided and unlike most other current options of 4tb nvmes, comes with dram on it too.

Does this come with utility software to clone an existing 980 pro  (1TB) and move everything onto the new 990 pro (4TB) device?  My operating system is on a different  SSD, so I have only data and installed programs with which to contend.

Have Samsung finally addressed the rapid deterioration of their 980 and 990 series SSDs with a firmware update?  Saw a lot of news articles and reviews about it earlier this year, but I can't find anything that suggests they've been fixed.  Would love to get confirmation on this before I buy one.

I bought a 2tb 990pro in August that had new (fixed) firmware out of the box, and it was pretty easy to check and update the firmware. I don't know if they recalled all the SSDs that left the factory with the bad old firmware or if it was just luck that I got a new one. That being said, I haven't heard any news about problems since around February.

Is it backward compat. with PCIe 3.0?

Yes the Samsung 990 PRO SSD is backwards compatible with PCIe 3.0 (the SDD would be limited to PCIe 3.0 speeds in this case though. The Samsung 990 PRO SSD would be faster if used with PCIe 4.0)
