can this phone be used in the state of Kansas and switched over to straight talk?

Yes it can but once upgraded to the newest os it relocks you can buy the samsung galaxy unlocker pro from the app store and it will unlock again permenitly.

This phone has a slide out keyboard--Is there another galaxy s phone with a touch screen keyboard?

The phone has the same on-screen / touchscreen keyboard that the Galaxy S' do, but it also has a slide-out physical keyboard; useful for extended typing, or just user preference. You can use the on-screen one any time; input is automatically switched to the physical keyboard upon sliding it open, and switches back when user closes the keyboard. fwiw - two of my family members have this phone, and it's been a pretty good experience for them.
