On closer look, it states 'Samsung HMD Odyssey+'  the plus indicator is at the end.  The unit I received was the plus version, and it is awesome.

Yes.. but it is not very comfortable! I highly recommend using the Widmo Vr Prescription lens inserts... I have them now on all of my VR headsets and I would never want to play without them. if you decide to order them you can use code :vrgamerdude at checkout for a small discount! []-)

how big of an area do i need to use this?

If you're seated, playing a simulation (i.e. a Flight simulator, Minecraft, or space game like Elite Dangerous), you need no 'area' at all, as the headset only allows you to look around in 3d space.  Note that in some of these types of games you don't use the controllers that come with the Odyssey+, but use mouse, keyboard, or joystick, as if you didn't use the VR Headset at all.
If you are playing a full VR game, you will need a sizable space, at least 5' x 8', making sure that you can extend your arms fully, then give another 2 to 3 feet or more for playing games where you use your arms to "attack".
In this mode, you are 'reminded' of your physical limitation by a hazy-outline that you can see as you approach it.  I've still hit the wall and desk a few times with my controller, so get as much space as you can IF you are going to dedicate to these types of games where you stand up.  
For me the stand-up/controller games are "gee-whiz" kind of things that you use once or twice, but then end-up sitting down and applying the headset to a game or two that totally immerse you into it's reality, like Elite Dangerous.

Will this work with Half-Life: Alyx?

Could this be used as a standard monitor to enlarge a Windows screen to aid low vision user?

No, I would not recommend this to be a replacement for a large monitor.  Besides owning the O+ headset, I have an Acer ET430K 43" monitor.  As a test, running that monitor and a lower resolution, or increasing the "Scale" (see  Windows 10 Display Properties) to 300% (Recommended), you get what you need.  
The O+ screen within the Windows 3D world does provide a desktop that you can stretch to the size you want, but the resolution is too small and is fuzzy.  Trying to find the right distance to virtually-stand in front of the floating desktop is frustrating, and I'm sure you're trying to make it easier on someone, not harder.

Can this unit be used as a second display when connected to an MSI GT83 Titan gaming laptop?

I am not sure about the meaning of "second display" here since you can't wear the headset and look at the laptop screen the same time. On the other hand, you can use it as a display with "Windows Mixed Reality for SteamVR" or some other apps from Windows/Steam stores. It will be very difficult to use keyboard so the best application will be watching videos or playing some non-VR game if you have a controller (XBOX or PS).
